I just purchased a 2011 Sierra Nevada Edition, its pretty basic and I am trying to do some of the upgrades myself. Mainly I wanted to install "factory autostart". I did some reading here and some say just to buy a FOB, and others say I have to buy a kit. How do I know what I need to install this factory OEM autostart? Thanks for helping out the newbie. :-)

you have to buy the kit, and the dealer has to program the bcm for it. The dealer must call into GM techline to get the code to enable remote start. Get the 2 way kit from gmaccessories, works great. I have a 2010 version of your truck, I got the dealer to install the 2 way remote kit. I paid around $275 installed.

You also need to have the RPO AP8, Remote Start Prep Pkg.

Part number 17802087 does not appear to require AP8. From the gmaccessories web site...

2-Way Advanced Remote Start

17802087By pressing a button on the key fob, the remote start system starts your parked vehicle. Great for pre-warming or pre-cooling your vehicle. Seamlessly integrated with your vehicle s anti-theft and remote keyless entry systems.2-Way Advanced Remote Start - Use on Regular Cab Models with Keyless Entry (AU0), But Without 4.3L Engine (LU3), 5-Speed Man. Trans. (TZ0) and Rear Window Defog (C49), Crew and Extended Cab Non-Hybrid Models with Keyless Entry (AU0), But Without 4.3L Engine (LU3), 5-Speed Man. Trans. (TZ0) and Rear Sliding Power Window (A48)

They do not list any remote start for 2011 trucks though. This listing is for the 2010. Not sure what is going on for them to not list any for 2011.

This is the basic remote start kit. The other one mentioned above is the advanced two way. For the basic you need RPO code AP8 (remote start prep). I just had one installed in January it was pretty simple. GM Parts direct lists this model number under the 2011 Sierra. You may be able to get it cheaper here but if you call your dealer you will probably be able to wheel and deal with them.

Also, don't let them charge you a ton in labor to do this. It is so simple it will only take them about 30 mins to complete the install. My dealer charged me like $40.00 in labor....

They all require AU8. The advanced two-way is an upgrade to the standard remote. Its just a different remote that shows tire pressure and other vehicle systems status. Here is a thread on those, look at the bottom of page 2 it explaind the advance remote in detail.

Sorry, but no. My truck does not have AU8. The dealer installed the kit that I quoted above. And it works just fine. My truck did not come with remote start. If you read the descriptions of all the 2 way units, the only one that does not require AU8 is 17802087, and I just got dressed, grabbed a flashlight and checked my tag in the glove box. No AU8, I have AU0 and AU3 though. I also found the invoice for the install of the remote start, they installed part number 17802087.

Great, thanks, sounds like i need to look for that code RPO AP8, i will get back to you all and let you know how i made out.

I just installed factory hitch today, it was a breeze and the truck was already pre-wire for the 7 pin, all I had to do was remove the dummy Wire Cover and replace with the real deal, that came with the package. Never even had to install a fuse, it was all powered up and ready to go.I also put on a pair of extendable tow mirrors with a built in Turn Arrow, worked great too, no extra programming

Cheers

K, here is the lastest info I received from GM. I got my build and I have RPO codes: AU0 and AU3, they said that my truck does not support either "Factory Autostart" like 17802087 (2 way) or the 17801236 (1 way). Apparently the 2 way is only supported from 207-2011 and the 17801236 is only supported on vehicle that are pre-installed for autostart.

And ideas or do I have to buy and aftermarket?

Thanks

What year is your truck 2010 or 2011? apparently it only works on 2010 and below

His truck is listed as a 2010 in his sig which is why I didn't argue with him. Like I said you need AP8.Autostart makes a great aftermarket starter that intergrat remote locks too.
