btw: I drop the pan, drain and refill (NOT machine flush) @ 165 KM, thank GOD still going strong

No new parts yet, will find out tomorrow what i will be needing, then will be ordering. Most likely useing OEM.

I just had my transmission rebuilt so I feel your pain. The guy I bought it from didn't bother to tell me that he put in a trans from a salvage yard and the side deal guy he goes to for mechanic work didn't report it. I'm thinking thats why it wasn't on the car fax. Needless to say hes a terrible mechanic and the trans was on its way out even though he now claims it had just been rebuilt. Definitely use GM parts for the rebuild mine is working great now.

My 4L60e has 301,000 miles on it and it gets used. I tow a car trailer atleast 3-4 times a month if not more and never had an issue. Granted I change driveline fluids every 15k-20k no matter what. Ive done the tranny flush and filter on many vehicles well past 50k 4L60e's included with out a single problem. I think it depends more on driving habits and conditions more than anything and proper upkeep

 

 

 

I would say this tranny had a very hard life early on resulting what you see here

 

 

i know of a few very high mileage 4L60's and some that have grenaded as low as 75,000 miles. im not saying its a bad tranny, theres a reason i still have all 4 speeds.

 

 

I hear ya. No offense meant to you. I just dont get how some vehicles have such failures. Ive never lost a engine, tranny, tcase, differential in any vehicle. Just blows me away when I see stuff like this. Just what the hell did the previous owner do to the truck to cause that much damage. Id expect to see a failure like this from a truck with the miles mine has deffinately NOT a truck with 80k.

 

BTW think the previous owner was the type who was still rolling in reverse when they put it into drive?

 

 

 

i really dont understand it either. my suburban, which has been in my family since new, was NEVER abused or noone drove it hard or anything, and the trans was done at about 120,000.. completley blew. but im almost 99% percent sure it was because i got a fluid flush.

 

now in my 2001 silverado, i drive it VERY hard. i floor quite often it many places, offroad with it, tow, drag race with it at maple grove, and it has 91,XXX miles on it right now and its shifting perfectly, so we'll see how she holds up. my 2003 4.8 has 88,XXX miles on it and still shifts good, but i wont have it much longer to see how it lasts.

the 60 is like russian roulette...some have to bite the bullet while others can just keep spinning the cylinder

Regarding the trans flush. They are fine IF the trans has been serviced regular. If it has not been serviced regular or you don't know the history, just drop the pan, clean things, replace filter, pan and refill. This only replaces part of the fluid (which is high detergent) so it tends to gradually clean things, not cause a bunch of crap to come loose like if you had done the flush on the trans with deposits and crud. Once you get 10-20k miles on after the service, flushing should be fine.

 

I have read it several times and tend to believe it, one the hardest things on an auto trans is to back up and shift to drive before coming to a complete stop. I have been told that it breaks things when you don't come to a complete stop. If you think about how many times each day you back and then drive away, it adds up and if there is a weak part, then it eventually breaks. I have ridden with guys that claim that they are easy on things and chirp the tires every time they backup and then go forward.

Oh i believe that is probably one of the leading causes of trans failure. I dont do that at all, i always make sure to come to a complete stop before shifting into drive. Have ridden in the truck with my friend, he shifts way early, not sure how his trans is holding up to all of that. Could have possibly been a habit of the previous owner. :thumbs:

Its all a crap shoot man I seen so many trucks get banged on hard at work, and we have so few transmission failures. When it happens it happens preventitive maintence helps, but when its time to go its time to go.

when I got my 4L60 rebuilt the guy that did the work told me the absolute worst thing you can do for your trans is not coming to a complete stop before switching gears. Even worse than never changing the fluid. He said it's fine on old transmissions like 350 and 400 turbo's, but not a modern 4L60E. I am sure to come to a complete stop now. BTW- Mine was rebuilt with 187,xxx on the clock.

Just heard back from my friend, need the planetary gearset, torque converter, and the master rebuild kit (gaskets, seals, clutches, ect). Final cost will be known tomorrow.

i dont know how much the price diffrence is, but instead of going the rebuild route when the trans was done in my suburban i just toughed it out and paid i think 2850 for a brand new 4L60e and it rides perfect now... it was worth it to me

301K!! Thats some serious miles. Is that all on one motor too?

 

 

My 4L60e has 301,000 miles on it and it gets used. I tow a car trailer atleast 3-4 times a month if not more and never had an issue. Granted I change driveline fluids every 15k-20k no matter what. Ive done the tranny flush and filter on many vehicles well past 50k 4L60e's included with out a single problem. I think it depends more on driving habits and conditions more than anything and proper upkeep

Definitely alot cheaper going the rebuilt route, im only paying for parts, So im looking at $600 or so for everything. Lucky to have a good friend in a trans shop, saved me $1000+ in labor easy.

Correct, the 5.3L, 4L60E, t-case, front and rear diff are factory original. Drove the truck off the lot with 8 miles on her. Best vehicle Ive owned by far. Im not gonna complain at all :thumbs:

Well got the news today, trans is done. Grand total is $830, which includes new torque converter, forward planet gearset, a few bearings, master rebuild kit, trans fluid, the tow to the shop and a few bucks for the shop owner for letting me use his tools/equipment. Overall not too bad, way cheaper than going with a brand new trans. Will be putting the truck back together friday.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
