2001 Duramax

Looking at a 2001 duramax, guy says it needs injectors, and a transmission. The known problem with this year was injectors sticking open and hydro locking the cylinder correct? When said problem happens, does it typically bend rods or twist cranks? Or simply stop the engine dead in it's tracks. What do stock injectors usually go for? What generally happens to the allison? Do the clutches just wear out fast or is there a known weak point that likes to break? Average cost of a rebuilt allison? Thanks.

Run like hell. The Allisons are not known for any problems. If it is slipping they probably abused it. On the injector side, typical problem. I have not heard of any throwing rods, but to get a set of injectors installed at the dealer you are looking at $3000 plus. Im thinking 3 is on the low side.

injectors will cost you around 5-6000 to get changed in canada. if the tranny is screwed, probly been limped a million times because buddy had it tuned too high. if an allison has problems its been abused for sure.

another thing...find a different truck to buy.

My buddy got a quote $5000. Injectors are $400 each. X8. And the book time is 13hours labor. I say stay away.

Run for the hills, huh. the only Reason it was in the running was because it's dirt cheap, and the body doesn't look all that bad. It's got a clean exterior with no rust what so ever. I can replace the injectors myself, so no wasted money at a stealership, and I'm still waiting on a response from him to see what it has for miles and what happened to the trans.

$5000 for a set of injectors?????

i have a purple donkey i will you sell you to!!!!!!

I put a complete set of 90hp injectors in mine for less that $3000. And putting them in not really a big deal. the hardest part is the all of the Allen head bolts that are used by the factory. the valve cover is 2 piece so it is twice the bolts. i replaced all of mine with hex heads as i know i will be going to a bigger nozzle on the future. I have never seen one that had injector problems like this cause any damage to the lower end of the motor.

As for the allison, i cant say that every one i have seen with problems is due to abuse. I have seen some go at 65k with a grandma behind the wheel as well as some go 200k with a box and a lead foot. Hell, i drove mine stock with 600+ hp for 5 months before i put an ATS kit in it. When it comes to the cost of a rebuild it really depends on if you plan on taking the whole truck somewhere or you are going to pull the tranny yourself. There are kits out there by ATS, BD diesel, Suncoast that are going to be able to handle 500 to 600 hp that are in the same price range as a stock rebuild kit. I pulled my tranny myself and had ATS build and it only ran me 6500 with copilot.

My suggestion is to shop around and get some prices for injectors and a good tranny kit, then what a decent tranny shop will charge you to rebuild it. i think you will find that a little of wrench turning on your part it will save you a bunch on money, plus you get the satisfaction of knowing did it yourself. I know i loved it when i hit 800HP on the dyno knowing that i did all the work myself!!
