Okay I read and read and read again and reasearched and read..so I know I wasn't just seeing things...This Chevy Cavalier

makes 700hp and they out of 2.2 Liters...that's 5+ hp per cubic inch...does this not amaze anyone but me??? Its okay to see a 500 Cube nitro-methang blowen Rat motor pushing out 3,000hp but at little bitty tiny insy Ecotec pushing 700hp!!!

i think Lingenfelter has a 1000+ hp Cavalier. pretty sure thats what he cracked in too. too bad its still fwd.. can you say.... torque steer.

but i'm sure in a drag only car they have stuff to help keep it in a straight line.

I wonder how much boost it took to get that hp number, and at what rpm???

Guys, I realize this is ancient history, but this bout w/ small displacement/4 cylinder and big power is not GM's first attempt (this ecotec is pretty solid, BTW for what it is).

In 1987/88 (yes probably about the time paco was in diapers Just yanking your chain paco!! ), GM had 2 versions of a Quad4 (2.3 L, 4 cylinder, 4 valves per cylinder), for use in the Olds Aerotech experimental/concept car.

One had a 700 hp single turbo, and one had 1100 HP twin turbo. My understanding is that they were running 25 psi, which is pretty high. I recall, at the time, Mercedes was trying to get similar hp/Liter, but had to run turbos to 100 psi!! They were blowing engines up right and left. Afterall, what is pressure, but *resistance* to flow - GM's approach was less resistance means lower pressure.

I heard a video/audio of the twin turbo Aerotech, and believe me, it sounded like a 4 cylinder on steroids!!

GM had lots of plans for the Aerotech and that twin turbo, but it tore up something like 2 trannys, so they never got to attempt several records they had in mind - a flying mile comes to mind.

BTW, that original Quad4 was not the timid, bland, tinny, lobotimized and wimpy 2.4L that Olds and Pontiac offer as base in the Alero and Grand Am.
