Gm Backup Camera Install

Ok I have perviously asked advice before on this but I haven't been able to find it to continue the post So sorry .I have a 2008 Sierra Denali navigation and a 2008 does not come with the VSS hardware so anything older then 2009 when you order from http://www.gmbackupcams.com/products/ ask for the cable that connects to stock brown clip in the back of navigating to covert it to a Yellow video cable. The cable does not list on there web page so ask for it.Also FYI thell make the camera ajusted so you can view your trailer receiver or any position just ask when ordering. So when I received the kit from http://www.gmbackupcams.com/products/.

When pulling you stock navigation out watch videos, the plastic trim sounds like its breaking but its just loud

So I started by running the video cable from the navigation under the carpet on the driver side going through the rubber grommet in the driver side floor board and sealed it with 3M emblem glue.

 

Next I used a coat hanger and pulled the video cable throughout the frame and came out right beside the wiring harness for the trailer.

After checking the length was enough I used heat shrink to hold the wire from back of the navigation to the video cable so not to pull apart.

Then my friend and I removed the tail gate and drilled two 11/16 holes in the bed and bottom of the tailgate and painted the holes black to help for corrosion and place my rubber grommets.

Then while getting some help from a friend “holding the tail gate in place” I used coat hanger to pull both the video and power feed for the camera up through the tailgate handle I also placed heat shrink between the bed and tailgate( don't heat yet).

I then disconnected the passenger rear tail light connecter from the rear junction block. I used the light green wire for” backup lamps power feed” and the black wire “ rear tail ground” and taped into them by soldering and using liquid tape. I finished it off by recovering the wires with stock wire loom and I placed a bigger wire loom over it to help protect the connection. With the tail gate shut I placed wire loom around the video cable and power feed and pushed the loom down in the tailgate so to keep from raddle and neater look.

Where the power feed connects to the camera and video cable connection is I used heat shrink to help the hold in-place and from water damage.

When tailgate is shut and tailgate bezel is placed back in place then heat shrink the cables between the tailgate and the bed( helps to protect and I cant see my cables)

I do want to say that Scott the CEO at GMbackupcams was very helpful . I needed help I called or emailed the company Scott will get back to you himself. Its nice to have help like that.

The kit from them comes with instruction and pictures on how to install the cable in the back of the nav unit and video wire ,zip ties and grommets and replacement tailgate bezel. When getting the nav unit enabled I got the dealer to do it with a case of beer and a friend but I got quoted by another dealer fro 50$.

Also Im not sure if it will work for you but my codes were current# 15260990 and selected #25836479 2008-2011 trucks short wheelbase and pickup extended /crew cab;GMc acadia; H2 Hummer; all with RPO UVC

Audio system (RPO U3U/UVB) navigation radio with XM

 

I hope this helps anyone also this hole adding picture thing is wired I hope it works out.

I wonder how big of a job it would be to connect it to the rear view mirror display versus the display listed.

You'd need a whole new mirror for one. It's not like the nav unit where the screen is already there.

I actually found it through his ebay listings (its a few buck cheaper through ebay if you use "Make Offer" ;) ). I got this one because it is about the same money but uses a CCD camera which is suppose to be better the the standard CMOS ones out there. Guy seems pretty nice, even emailed me his Cell if I need support.

 

Kit arrived on Monday and I will be installing it this weekend when I rip out the interior to do a full stereo upgrade (amp, sub, components, head unit, etc.).
