Already starting to look at rim selections.

My thought is to go from my 18" to aftermarket 17" with 285 tires.

Any drawbacks to this ?

IMO, the 17s are better off road due to the sidewall's ability to flex and less wheel weight where the larger 20's are more street friendly

I had 20s and went to 18s. First of the tires are WAY cheaper at 18 inch. 305/55/20 BFG were $525 a tire here. 275/70/18 Nitto Terra Grappler I got for $138 a tire. With the extra side wall the truck rides much smoother, I don't feel like I'm going to chip a tooth on the expansion joints. The truck tows the trailer much nicer as well. With the short side walls the truck used to grab every rut in the road and you had to be ON ALL THE TIME. The extra side wall gives the tire some flex and its easier to control the truck. And the last benefit I've noticed is the wheel and tire combo is lighter than the 20 inch set up, tha translates to better gas mileage. I haven't done and official calculation but the DIC show me about 1.5 mpg better. And yes I have retuned for the different tire size so the DIC is closer to correct.

Nope - Both sizes you are listing have the exact same OD - 33.2". This is 1.7" larger in OD than stock 18" tire/wheel combo of 31.5". So the DIC is off by the same amount with either of your combos.
