Will Not Come Out Of Park

96 1500 and it will not come out of park. shift is like stuck there and will not move. if i push on brakes 5 times really fast it will come out and work fine. any ideas? put new brake switch in it but did not put the clip back in it.

Buddy had this problem too. It ended up being the linkage in the column (Brake shift interlock). Might be something to look at.

Sounds to me like it is the brake switch. It will only cost you a few bucks, and it is a good place to start. It is located above the brake pedal. When you press the brake, the switch allows the shifter to be moved out of park. Try not to force the shifter, as you may end up breaking something else. Good luck.

He already replaced the brake switch and that switch sends power to the interlock which should be the next troubleshooting step.

Had the same problem with wifey's Burb.I removed the lower column cover,disconnected the rod controlling the lockout mechanism(directly under the gearshift).The rod just pops off(I used a flat screwdriver).Might not have been the best way to solve the prob but it's been trouble free for several months now with no ill effects.

after 2 clips it finally went in (lost the first one) and it works great now.

the brake switch is held in by a clip, i lost the first one fell down inside the bottom of the dash,
