Power Steering Oil Change

I would like to change power steering oil, dealer say no need, just add if needed...who cares?

Any advice on how to change it for NBS (GMT900)?

The easiest way is to just suck out of the reservoir what you can with a turkey baster. You can pick them up at the dollar store cheap. Then refill with fresh fluid. Drive a few days and do it again. If you do this about three to for times then all the fluid will be pretty much changed out.

Most don't mess with their power steering fluid. I find that as easy as it is to do and not very expensive for the fluid why not. It is another fluid that over time does get dirty. I go about 30k on average to change it out.

Good idea, I found the part number (89021184)for the power steering, is it special oil for steering ONLY?.

Thanks

I have this 'extractor' that I picked up in the local farm shop that I have to use to get lube into a gear box. It looks like a grease gun w/o a large handle and a bit thicker in diameter and a D handle on the end. I was wondering how to change the power steering fluid in an older truck the better halfs sister owns when I remembered this little gizmo. IT sucked ALL the fluid out of the resevoir in one pull of the handle! Did that twice more and went stop to stop on the steering wheel and it seems pretty clean now.

It came with a flexible tube and works pretty good for rear end lube changes too, other than the little bit left in the lowest spot. Maybe its not a great idea for that but I did that twice on my 99' so I figure it was better than nothing.

I think I paid around $15 for it.

I have the Pela Oil Extractor. I got it to change out the oil in our boat. Now that we no longer have a boat I use to to change the oil in the lawn mowers and the power steering. Works great. As for power steering fluid. Just go to a local auto parts store and get a bottle of power steering fluid and make sure is states for GM. Or you can get a bottle of AMSOIL's power steering fluid.

It looks like this. 7815a.jpg

AMSOIL also sells one like described above. It is $16.75
