Just Got Free Onstar

I know that there are board members that are not fans of Onstar so if you're one of them, you can skip this thread.

I received in the mail today an offering from GMAC Insurance for 12 months of Onstar FREE - Safe and Sound pkg. No commitment either. I just had to call GMAC Insurance, give them my "preferred customer code" that was on the letter, and get a free quote on auto insurance. I called and the rep told me that I needed the quote number to get my Onstar. So I went through the whole process - blah blah blah - and got my quote and quote number. Then I had to contact Onstar via the blue button to reactivate my Onstar. When I connected with Onstar, I told the advisor that I had a promotional offer from GMAC Ins for 12 months of Onstar free. The advisor said okay, asked a few questions to reactivate my account and then I was done. Didn't need the quote number after all. Later I called Onstar via landline to get my account number to set up my online account and they verified that the account was active.

I don't know if Onstar didn't need the quote number because they were already notified that I received a quote. Could be that anyone can contact Onstar and say they have the GMAC Ins promotional offer and get it for free. Someone could try and let everyone else know if it works without having to get the quote first.

FWIW - I have never had to use Onstar when I had it on all my different vehicles. That said, I did need it once when my mother locked my keys in the truck, and I had let Onstar expire the month before. LOL I did call Onstar but no dice. They did tell me that I had the GM Roadside Assistance on my truck and gave me that number to get the doors unlocked.

I like having the security of Onstar in case I do need it. Now if they would just provide an upgrade to the system so that I can use the Onstar myLink app.

not gonna happen, but wishful thinking..

so this "quote" do you have GMAC Insurance or did you just have to get a quote to qualify for the free offer? I have 16 months remaining on my free onstar (first 12 free from purchase, then an additional 12 added for some ongoing onstar issues taht took quite a bit to get corrected) I wonder if I can add this 12 free to the back end of my remaining and grab another year...

No - I don't have GMAC Ins. I just had to get the quote. I'm now reading the "fine" print and it says that the offer is valid on vehicles with an inactive Onstar system. So I guess you wouldn't qualify. I'll update my original post with this detail and the offer expiration date

lol, guess they don't want use stacking up free years...
