2004 Z71 Silverado Front Axle Engagement

Are you putting the truck in Auto-4x4 or 4x4?

If the t-case is engaged in 4x4, the driveshaft shouldn't be spinning.

The drive shaft rotates while spinning either wheel and I am in 4x4, not auto. No service codes for anything. I am referring to the intermediate shaft spinning.

Honestly, sounds like more of a t-case issue now. Your driveshaft (intermediate shaft) should not be spinning in 4x4 during this test.

No service codes indicates that the front actuator and shift motor are (probably) functioning properly. I wonder if the clutch packs in the tcase are shot.

I'd try replacing the fluid, see how the old fluid looks. If there's a lot of clutch material in it, then that'd be my guess at this point.

I can physically hold the intermediate shaft and spin the front driver side tire and the passenger side tire rotates.

Yeah... so it sounds like the front diff is working properly.

The problem right now is that if you're tcase is in 4x4, the front and rear driveshafts can't (shouldnt be able to) turn independently from each other.

Since you need to hold the front driveshaft to stop it from spinning, that tells me the t-case is not engaging. Since you don't have any 4x4 service codes, the shift motor is probably working properly... so it sounds like an actual mechanical failure somewhere in the tcase itself.

Well, thanks for all your help. Transfer case is pretty much out of my league. Looks like it is off to the repair shop, I guess I will have to fire up my old reliable 1996 Silverado. Thanks for all your help, I will keep you posted on the end result.

hey guys to the T having this same issue.

just put a new transfercase motor because mine would not shift into 4hi or 4 low. press the button and no noise. so that issue is now fixed.

i also put a new selector button and new front 4wd actuator.

over the summer i had a shop put in new gears and i had the front and rear 4:56 gears. i have also had the truck tuned and programmed for all the changes.

Still no 4wd!!

when i drive i dont hear any crazy noised in the diff itself.

any suggestions?
