99 Burb Brake Switch Issue

I am replacing the brake light switch on my Suburban. The clearance to ge to the switch is very minimal. I finally was able to pop off the small, round retaining clip off of the switch shaft and remove the switch off the brake pedal and install the new one. I cannot find a way to get enough room to re-install the retaining clip.

 

What is the trick. No where can I find a mention of how to get this clip back on. There is no direct line of sight access to the clip.
