252,xxx Mile Lr$ 4.8liter...

is starting to worry me. Going through 3 quarts of oil every 6,000 miles or so and is not nearly as powerful as it used to be. Oh well, nothing lasts forever.

I'm pretty settled on putting in another engine instead of new truck so I hoping you guys can help me out with some questions:

1) Where is the best place (i.e. price) to buy a GM Goodwrench Crate engine in the 4.8 Liter model?

2) I've got a 2002 Silverado which would mean the motor is a Generation III LR4, I believe. I've read that the Gen IV LY2 makes about 25 more HPs than the LR4...so, could I put an LY2 long block in the LR4 engine bay (using all the LR4 electronics) and get the extra HPs?? Worth it??

Thanks, VE

Pretty sure the Gen IV engines got a new type of PCM. I'd skip the stock replacement and try to find a low mile 5.3 or even 6.0 to throw in there.

<br />Try a can of Restore. I've used it in the past with good results. <img src="style_emoticons/default/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /><br />

What is Restore bud? Where can I find it? Thanks

Don't put a 6.0 in there unless you change the transmission.

or maybe he could have his 4L60 rebuilt with HD parts? (I believe there are kits available)

Yes, but a stock 4L60e (assuming thats what he has, seeing as its a 4.8) will be a very weak link if that's the route he chooses. And with that mileage if the transmission hasn't been done yet, it won't be long.

OK, barring the can of Restore working then I'm going with the new engine. I'm thinking the 6.0 is too big a stretch for the rest of the OEM components that I'm not replacing (transmission etc) so.....

Whats the deal with dropping a 5.3 long block into it using the 4.8 bolts ons?? Are the intakes, injectors, PCM and all the same? Or would I need a complete 5.3 setup from another truck?

Anyone have any personal 1st hand experience with this?

OK, nevermind...the search function is my friend. Looks pretty straightforward at first pass.

or even Lucas Oil Stabilizer.

i used that on my old truck that was consuming oil. about a quart every 3,000 miles. consumption stopped afterusing that stuff. it works the same as Restore, but i've never tried that stuff in it.

have you checked to see if the oil pan or rear main seal is leaking?

The "restore stuff" is supposed to "fill scratches in cylinder walls." The lucas stuff is just really thick oil, so it quietens knocking bearings, and slows leaks..
