Xm Radio Module ?

Does the XM module need to be programmed to the truck it is in? The dealer says mine has gone bad and they want $335 to fix it. I have found salvage ones for much cheaper but I need to know if I need to get it programmed to the truck. It is going in a 2008 Sierra 1500.

Yes,From the service manual....

 

Each of the following service procedures requires programming or setup procedures to be performed on the digital radio receiver.

 

XM™ Activation

Important: After replacement of an XM™ receiver, call XM™ radio to deactivate the receiver that has been removed from the vehicle. The vehicle must be parked in view of a satellite within 24 hours after an activation call.

 

•Radio ON, tune to the XM™ channel 0 and record the radio ID. The radio ID will be required for activation of the new receiver.

•Call XM™ radio to deactivate the faulty receiver and activate the new receiver.

• US: 1-800-556-3600

 

• Canada: 1-877-438-9677

 

•Park the vehicle outside in an area with an unobstructed view of the southern sky.

•Leave the vehicle outside with the ignition switch in the ACC position and the radio ON, tune to the XM™ channel 1 for 30 minutes to activate XM™ service.

•Once activated, the radio will receive the remaining XM™ channels.

Ok I should have been more specific, does the new module need to be programmed or "synced" to the truck w/ scan tool by the dealer?

 

Thank you for the above reply. I can do the XM stuff in the driveway no sense paying the dealer $86 to make a phone call.

On the XM modules,I've seen it both ways,some do some don't (I know when I added the GM accessory kit to trucks that didn't have XM from the factory they didn't,we just had to call XM to activate it)

Yours might because its used,and I would strongly recommend against a used one,our guys here always seem to have issues programming used modules,so much so that we no longer even try to use any used modules.

I purchased a used Sirius GM module from TSS-Radio, and it's plug and play. Just install the new module, and call SiriusXM to turn off the old one, and activate the new one. Worked like a champ, and I had no issues.

I purchased a used Sirius GM module from TSS-Radio, and it's plug and play. Just install the new module, and call SiriusXM to turn off the old one, and activate the new one. Worked like a champ, and I had no issues.

 

 

I've been working with several used truck parts for the last 9 years. When these XM Units first came out back around the 2003 model year they were a very well desired upgrade....

 

Truth of it is, from what I found, the dealer could never get the used ones reprogrammed to the vehicle in which they were going into. It seems to me like Rich said above, its better to use a new module than a used one as the programming success is pretty much unheard of. You can buy the aftermarket Sirius Module and plug it in with success though, I have done that a few times.

 

Overall I think you probably did the best thing for your dollar and got something new!
