Hey all,

Just got home from work about an hour ago. I grabbed the mail and found a letter from Chevrolet. It states the HVAC wiring between the relay resistor module and the blower motor may be incapable of conducting higher current levels for sustained periods, causing the relay resistor or the wiring to overheat. I'll scan the document so you can read the whole letter. It came with a second form for reimbursement. It states that if you have paid for the repairs for the recall condition, to complete the second form.

 

Here is the thing. My truck has had this fixed three times, once the relay resistor module went bad and the harness has been repaired twice. The harness repair doesn't meet my standards, being I work with automotive wiring all day long, it was butt connected with the wrong size butt connectors and then just wrapped in electrical tape. I would prefer it had been soldered and shrink wrapped, then wrapped to look as though it was never touched but that's me. All was done under warranty.

Has anyone else seen this and know exactly what the repair consists of?

I posted the TSB about this before,for the record...it is NOT a recall,it is a special policy bulletin that extends the warranty on the mentioned items,you only get the items replaced if you have the issue mentioned in the bulletin (IE-You just can't go into the dealer and have the parts replaced unless your truck is having the problem)

Subject: 10240 - Special Coverage Adjustment - Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Blower Not Fully Functional or Inoperative

 

 

Models: 2003-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche, Suburban Tahoe

2003-2006 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL

 

2003-2007 GMC Sierra

 

Equipped with Manual HVAC (CJ3) or Heavy Duty Heater (C42)

Condition

On some 2003-2006 model year Chevrolet Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe; GMC Yukon, Yukon XL; and 2003-2007 model year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicles equipped with a manual heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system (CJ3) or heavy duty heater (C42), the interface between the electrical terminals of the relay resistor module and the wiring connector that powers the module may be incapable of conducting higher current levels for sustained periods of blower motor operation. In addition, moisture and other contaminants may enter the fresh air intake plenum and contact the internal circuit of the module or corrode the terminals. If any of these were to occur, the relay resistor module or wiring connector could overheat and the HVAC blower may not function on certain blower settings or may be inoperative. This may be accompanied by a burning smell or smoke.

 

Special Policy Coverage Adjustment

This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.

 

Dealers are to install a new blower motor resistor and resistor module connector. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

 

For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after May 10, 2011, are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to May 10, 2011, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.

 

Vehicles Involved

Involved are certain 2003-2006 model year Chevrolet Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe; GMC Yukon, Yukon XL; and 2003-2007 model year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicles equipped with a manual HVAC (CJ3) or heavy duty heater (C42).

 

Important: Dealers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using the Applicable Warranties section in the Global Warranty Management system.

Parts required to complete this special coverage are to be obtained from General Motors Customer Care and Aftersales (GMCC&A).

Service Procedure

Note: The resistor module connector and blower motor resistor will need to be replaced if one or more of the symptoms below is present.

 

• The HVAC blower may not function on certain or all blower speed settings

 

• A burning plastic smell or smoke may be present in the vehicle

 

• The HVAC blower may run continually with the ignition in the OFF position

 

Determine if one or more of the above symptoms is present. If required, refer to HVAC diagnostic information in SI. Refer to Resistor Module Connector and Blower Motor Resistor Replacement in this bulletin if one or more of the symptoms are present. Other HVAC repairs are NOT covered in this product safety special coverage bulletin.

 

Resistor Module Connector and Blower Motor Resistor Replacement

Remove the blower fuses (Htr A/C & HVAC 1 fuses).

Lower the close-out panel enough to gain access to the resistor module connector.

Disconnect the connector from the resistor module.

Note: Connector replacement is required even if the connector was replaced on a previous service repair.

 

Remove the tape from the wiring harness to expose the wiring.

 

Cut the wires back far enough from the connector to eliminate any melted insulation on the wire.

Note: Use the old connector as a map for splicing the wires for the new connector. Be sure to use the correct crimping tool from the terminal repair kit J 38125. Use only Duraseal splice sleeves. Other splice sleeves may not protect the splice from moisture or provide a good electrical connection.

 

Install the new connector. Use the yellow splice sleeves provided with the connector.

Install the new blower motor resistor.

Reinstall the fuses. Test the blower motor to make sure all speeds are functional.

Reinstall the hush panel/close-out panel.

Customer Reimbursement

Customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs for the condition described in this bulletin are to be submitted to the dealer May 31, 2012, unless otherwise specified by State law. Repairs must have occurred within 10 years of the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first.

 

All reasonable customer paid receipts should be considered for reimbursement. The amount to be reimbursed will be limited to the amount the repair would have cost if completed by an authorized General Motors dealer.

 

When a customer requests reimbursement, they must provide the following:

 

• A completed Customer Reimbursement Request Form. This form is mailed to the customer or can be obtained from the dealer.

 

• The name and address of the person who paid for the repair.

 

• VIN, original paid receipt confirming the amount of repair expense(s) that were not reimbursed, a description of the repair, and the person or entity performing the repair.

 

For US dealers:

If a reimbursement request is denied, dealers MUST provide the customer with an explanation, in writing, as to why the request was denied. GM expects all reimbursement requests to be properly resolved within 30 days of receipt. If the denial was due to missing documents, the customer can resubmit when the missing documents are obtained, as long as it is still within the allowed reimbursement period.

 

Courtesy Transportation - For US

The General Motors Courtesy Transportation program is intended to minimize customer inconvenience when a vehicle requires a repair that is covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranties. The availability of courtesy transportation to customers whose vehicles are within the warranty coverage period and involved in a product program is very important in maintaining customer satisfaction. Dealers are to ensure that these customers understand that shuttle service or some other form of courtesy transportation is available and will be provided at no charge. Dealers should refer to the General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual for Courtesy Transportation guidelines.

 

Customer Notification

General Motors will notify customers of this special coverage on their vehicles (see copy of typical customer letter included with this bulletin - actual divisional letter may vary slightly).

 

 

Dear General Motors Customer:

 

As the owner of a 2003-2006 model year Chevrolet Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe; GMC Yukon, Yukon XL; or 2003-2007 model year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicle, your satisfaction with our product is very important to us.

 

This letter is intended to make you aware of a condition that may affect your vehicle. The relay resistor module (which controls blower motor speed) and/or the wiring connector that powers the module may overheat during sustained blower motor operation, or if moisture and other contaminants contact the internal circuit of the module. These occurrences may result in an inoperative blower motor, or result in a blower motor that functions only on certain settings. This may be accompanied by a burning smell or smoke.

 

Do not take your vehicle to your GM dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described above.

 

What We Have Done: General Motors is providing owners with additional protection for this condition. If this condition occurs on your 2003-2006 model year Chevrolet Avalanche, Suburban, Tahoe; GMC Yukon, Yukon XL; or 2003-2007 model year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra vehicle, equipped with a manual HVAC or heavy duty heater, within 10 years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge . Diagnosis or repair for conditions other than the condition described above is not covered under this special coverage program.

 

What You Should Do: If you believe that your vehicle has the condition described above, repairs and adjustments qualifying under this special coverage must be performed by a General Motors dealer. You may want to contact your GM dealer to find out how long they will need to have your vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment at a time that is convenient for you. This will also allow your dealer to order parts if they are not already in stock. Keep this letter with your other important glove box literature for future reference.

 

Reimbursement: If you have paid for repairs for the condition described in this letter, please complete the enclosed form and present it to your dealer with all required documents by May 31, 2012, unless otherwise specified by State law.

They replace the resistor and resistor connector.

my father in law has a 05 or 06 silverado and has had noting but problems out of the heat and ac. been in the shop like 5 times and always comes back. one side will blow cold the other will melt you with the heat. is this for that?

On long winter trips - a CD in the player will get so hot that you almost can't hold it. Is this part of the problem?

No,The radio/CD player has nothing to do with the blower motor resistor.

Nope,This TSB has nothing to do with temperature issues,this is for the blower motor resistor (IE-blower motor speeds)

My resistor blew this past spring. I purchased a replacement resistor on my own (thx, Rich!!) and installed it myself. It works great now, but I'm going to explore whether or not I can still be reimbursed for the cost of the parts.

My understanding is that if you have the reciept, you can be reimbursed....any GM folks wnt to confirm this please

    • I bought belts and pulleys for my '20 L5P at Rock Auto a couple years ago. I have used them for many years, and almost always save significant money, especially when I buy maintenance stuff ahead of time.   They carry many OEM parts, which is all I use unless an aftermarket is shown to be same/superior, or if it is an insignificant part or unavailable OEM part anywhere else. RA is usually lower priced, often by a bunch, but parts are sometimes unavailable or out of stock, and I do shop around and sometimes find better prices at other sites.   Be aware that you pay shipping, and if you buy multiple items and they are coming from different warehouses, the shipping can kill the advantage. Planning ahead is best if possible.   If you have a transmission service in the near future, check out their OEM (AC Delco ULV) fluid, usually MUCH less than anywhere else.
    • New member here, very long time occasional guest. Saw this thread, thought it would be a good time to contribute someting. It is only my experience and not a claim that everyone will have the same.   I bought my '20 3500 L5P new and have put 99.9% (literally) of it's current ~400k miles on it myself, with over 50% of that towing loads between 4k to 15k, and to me this truck has been nothing short of amazing. For the first 235k I had zero issues, and from there until 321k I replaced a NOx sensor, two failing glow plugs, and three of the notorious injector connectors. I believe this truck is in part, a testament to good luck, but also good care and following a decent maintenance schedule (I also keep meticulous records.) As a result, it looks as good as a well cared for 70k rig, up and down, inside and out.   At some point before that 321k mile mark I began to get a little spooked about the 10L1000, especially the valve body. Word of mouth about potential issues prompted me to jump on the net to sift through all the noise and determine what all the fuss was about. I routinely take long trips, coast-to-coast and points in between, so roadside breakdowns can be '...a thousand miles from nowhere' and a bit of a challenge, and though I had no issues, my guard was up and activated.   And then I stumbled across a chance to salvage some parts off a new 2025 that had been wrecked in transport. I grabbed a few wear items (alternator, pulleys, etc.) and on a whim asked what the ten speeder would cost me. It was cheap...really cheap. I knew some changes had been made in the '24+ version 10L and were supposedly not compatible, but I called service/parts at my local Chevy dealer and asked why and they didn't know. A call to a well known aftermarket transmission outfit revealed it was very likely it would be fine, but to them not 100% sure.   Because it was cheap (really cheap) and I was spooked, I took the chance. Had it installed by a local shop and it worked like a champ, shifted just like the original. At it's first service at 37k, I had the shop put in a Next Gen valve body kit, which after some initial hiccups and rough shifts, smoothed out though with somewhat firmer shifting.   All that said, I have a very serious concern about my newer transmission as just two weeks ago it suddenly began to exhibit a strong reluctance to engage forward or reverse. It was a bit past due anyway so I took it in for service. The reason it was sticking was due to 'glitter' in the fluid clogging the filter...not good folks, often indicates a converter giving out. We ended up going ahead with the new filter and fluid, first to see if it would move and shift, and then if so buy me a little time. It did, and I've driven it over a thousand miles and it is shifting smooth, no noises or slipping. Regardless, it looks like a third gearbox is in my future so I can resume taking long trips with some confidence. In the very short term, my curiosity will have me examining the fluid to check how much glitter has reappeared.   An earlier poster had alleged, in the context of 10L100 failures, that it is another example of how we seasoned citizens somehow descend into hysteria, lose control of our senses, and react irrationally after brief encounters with the idiocy of the internet infosphere. Let me say (and I have used and abused said internet since it's infancy) there is no segment of the populace that has a corner on over-reaction to digital garbage. Just as my offering of experience in this arena is purely anecdotal and should not be considered gospel or all-encompassing, I believe it is still worthwhile information to consider, along with other relevant anecdotal experiences about things like complex transmissions, especially when balanced with other sources.   So to answer the original question, yes I got high miles out of my first 10L, trouble free for 321,000. Now I really wonder how much longer it would have went. Did I 'overreact' to the internet ghouls by replacing a 'good' one with a 'bad' one? Maybe. Who knows, the thing might have taken a puke a 100 miles later. So I'll just fix it again, then move on and start thinking about all the other stuff that will eventually wear out. It still has the original brakes (they're at ~60%), original injectors/pump, turbo, water pump, etc....pretty much original everything. Knock on wood.
    • At peak temperature.  They get to cool down and warm up more, especially those with the external cooler.  I have three GMT900s and one of them has over 225K on its original transmission.  Fluid gets changed about every 36K miles, all of it.     It's not the bean counters, it was the government.  They had to meet CAFE standards and other government requirements.   To get around that, we tune them and modify them to our liking.
