Gps Mount

Tired of the suction cup mount on the window. been searching around for a dash board mount for a Magellan ran across this. Any other ones out there that work well?

kuda mounts are very nice.. they blend well and don't look like cheap clip ons..

had one in my Chrysler 300 and my Impala..

been looking at them for my AV, but can't justify $70 for a cell phone or ipod mount.

I still have to use the suction cup mount, but here is how I did mine as clean as possible with a back-up cam included;

In California (the state that has to make everything so damn difficult), you are supposed to have your GPS mounted in the lower left hand corner of the windshield and not in the middle.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 5000, the only one I know of that has a remote video input. I had to get this model specifically so I could attach a back up camera. So I got a back-up camera kit that is mounted in a black aluminum license plate frame. I ran the wires from the rear bumper and along the frame where the rear signal light wires run and entered the cab through a factory plug under the rear door area. They go to the front dash under the door frame trim panels.

This model GPS (many Garmin units are like this) has the power cord connecting to the mount and not the unit itself. This is great because you pull the unit quickly without messing with the power cord. I cut off the 12 volt plug at the end and wired into a spare accessory fuse in the fuse block. This way, as you can see in the pic, no nasty cord crossing the dash to plug in. The power cord and the video line-in come from the windshield frame trim. I just used a small sanding drum on my Dremmel to make a small notch for the cords to exit.

Only two problems with this set up;

1. Obviously still using the suction cup and not a perfect solution, but still pretty clean. When there are big shift in temp (cold to hot), the suction cup drops off. In general its pretty strong and holds tight.

2. It takes about 45 to 90 seconds for the GPS to load up when you turn the truck on, so you have to wait for that when you get in and want a back-up image from the camera.

You can easily buy a spare power cord so you can pull the GPS and use it in another car, which I do when I travel and drive a rental.
