3500 Dually

I have a 04' 3500 dual rear. I have noticed a squeak coming from rear when driving and reversing. It has the 8.1 and Allison tranny. After trolling the boards I figure its the U joints. 140k miles by the way. Am I correct to assume the u joint is the problem? I am going to check differential fluid in morning.

Is there a repair manual out that covers the 8.1 and Allison trans? Haynes and Chilton seem to dislike us.

Thank you fellas.

ck the center support bearing too,,the u-joint at the tranny seems to go first

Checked fluid, was ok. Had someone else back up for me and it really sounds like the rear. I will probably replace all 3 this weekend. Hope that is all. First mechanical repair for the brute. Minus maintenance. So I am thrilled with my Chevy!

I didn't think of it until after my first post. I second the checking of the carrier bearing.

Checking of the carrier bearing it is. It looks worn some twistage but not real bad. However I am the type that "do it right the first time, so there isn't a second time". Where can I find a carrier bearing? And is that the the correct terminology? I'm planning to just replace the 3 U joints and carrier bearing this weekend. What type U joint is better? With/without grease fittings? I live south of ATL, Ga. I'm not ever in mud or off road.

You guys have helped me tons! Thank you again
