Problem After Replacing Ecbm On '00 Z71

When you replace the Kelsey-Hayes Electronic Control Break Module (ECBM) which is part of the ABS unit, do you have to program it with a tech II or something else to make it work with the truck?

I had the problematic code CO265 come in with my ABS & Brake Lights both triggered on. I did all the normal stuff (reseated the plugs, fuses, cleaned ground wires and frame, etc.) and then decided after all the research, that I needed to replace the ECBM on the ABS pump as it had a circuit fault internally. I read that this was a big problem over the years of my truck.

I installed another unit (pump and all) and after bleeding it all out and cleaning up, the truck would not start. Upon further inspection, I noticed the fuel level and temperature gauges were not working when the key was on. After several tries of various ideas received from friends that did not work, I unplugged the large plug from the unit and "voila!", it cranked right up and all the gauges worked. Of course, then the ABS light was on, but not the break light. I tried to powering down the computer, relanding the plugs, etc., but nothing would make it work as if I plugged it back in, the truck would not start.

If anyone could help by letting me know it needs to be programmed or something else I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I would have to check at work tommorow to be 100% sure but almost all GM modules need to be programmed now. Some but not most can be done with the tech2. Most need to be done with a pass-thru programmer and the GM web site. I charge $95 for this. Most large shops should have the ability to do this.

Please let me know what you find and above all, "Thank you" for checking into it. It is my sons truck and Dad has to keep him safe and sound. Thanks again.

The only thing that you need to do to that module is set the tire size which will NOT set a C0265. You got a bunk module. Been seeing a rash of them causing the same dtc after replacement, take it back.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. The code was present before changing the module. There are no codes yet as it will not start if I plug it in. It just spins over. I have to leave the large plug off and it cranks and all the gauges work. If I plug it in, I lose the Temp and Fuel gauges and it will not start. That is why I was assuming/wondering if it needed to be programmed to work first(?)

You have a ground issue somewhere. See if you can light a halogen headlamp bulb off from the small two wire plug, going to the ebcm, that has the large red and black wires in it.

I had my son go out and try it while I was at work. He said it did work. I am assuming it is either in the module (bad ground) or it needs something else to sync it to the truck(?)

Bumping back up to see if anyone knew for sure about this requiring programing or if it is just a bad module. I would just like to be sure before I go through the headache of pulling it back off. Thanks!

Again,

1. You had the same dtc before you replaced the ebcm = replacing the ebcm did not repair the concern.

2. C0265's are caused by poor power and/or ground supplies to the ebcm, faulty ebcm, faulty bpmv or incorrect ebcm for the vehicle. 98% of all cases of this dtc were due to poor ground issues. The halogen headlamp bulb check, when the concern is present, will show you if you have a poor power or ground issue. Considering that the dtc was stored before you replaced the ebcm, I highly doubt you got a faulty ebcm. That is very rare. If you think that it might be the bpmv, disconnect the two wire pump motor connector, from the bpmv to the ebcm, from the ebcm and see if the C0265 continues to set.

3. While the ebcm DOES need to be calibrated for correct tire size for the vehicle it is installed in, it requires no programming to make it work and NOT set a C0265.

I took it down and hand a friend at the dealership hook it up to their Tech II and when he ran the diagnostics on it, he said the ECBM had a dead short in it and is why the truck would not start when plugged in. I have sent my original off to be repaired ($60) as I am told it is a common problem that is repairable. When it gets back next week, I will put it back in place of this one and then return this bad unit.

I will post back up when received and if the ABS/Brake light stays off.

I just got it back form the repair guy. Hooked it back up and it works like new. No ABS or Brake light on and no C0265 code anymore.

If anyone has this problem, here is the link for EBCM Repair Guy and he gives a lifetime warranty for his repair. I paid $60 and a new one was $600-$800.
