Rust Painted The Underside Parts Of My New Tuck

Perhaps an issue with OCD and rust... but I've restored cars in the past, and can't stand the site of it especially being up North where they use salt in winter.

 

So.. what bugs me about new trucks today, many parts aren't coated or painted, and if there's paint, it's too thin such as on the diff, hitch, drums and backing plates, calipers, control arms, shafts, leafs, etc..

 

Here's the truck when I bought it, first thing I did was buy a set of wheel liners, they were $95 for the pair. 5.3L long box, oh I do love having a long box, plus the vinyl floors.

 

 

 

Then when I got it home, put it up on stands, and went at it, painted all the stuff that didn't have paint, also ran it in 4wd at idle on the stands to paint all the shafts as they rotated to get good coverage.

Here it's all finished, also added another piece of rear door side trim piece on the side box shown in the other post I made debating stripes. Also bought the side box rail caps and tonneau cover from GM. Weathertech mud flaps and side window deflectors.

 

 

Just wanted to share even if there's good or bad comments, and that's ok regardless. I just appreciate having a new GMC truck and hope it lasts a long time.

I used Tremclad gloss black paint, bought it by the gallon at a hardware store. I find that the gloss paint is more durable than flat, takes longer to cure, but is more durable and sticks well. Others may suggest POR15.

Yeah I notice that they dont coat much of anything underneath, My wifes 2005 nissan altima is completely coated with some kind of rubberized coating that seems really durable and i havent found any rust underneath her car yet! Also has anyone seen that "rubber in a can" commercial that when sprayed it starts bubbling then I guess rubberizes after awhile? Would like to line the wheel wells with that stuff and possibly parts underneath the frame and such.

i have used por15, it is a good product. i started using "chassis saver" on all my projects. i can tell no difference in quality, and it is much cheaper.

You would have died of a heart attack if you'd have seen my first truck. I was so pissed, I threw a fit till they took it back and gave me a new truck....one exactly like yours. LOVE my ECLB!!!

 

FWIW, I wouldn't worry about the little you have. If you'd like, I will try to find pictures of mine. You'll feel much better about that one. :-)

For you guys that know, would I be able to do a project like this with a rust stopping spray paint like rustoleum? I would actually try this project if it could be done with a spray paint and still be worthwhile. Rustoleum has a new spray paint called rustoleum universal which has a rust stopper, primer and paint all in one and is also high adhesion. It needs almost no surface preparation and works for clean metal, rusted metal, plastic, vinyl, wood and pretty much everything else. The can is also the new kind that sprays at any angle, even upside down. So would 2 or 3 coats of product like Rustoleum universal work in the same way por-15 or chassis saver would? I consider myself good with the mechanical work but dont know much about paint work. Thanks for your help and the great idea you have here.
