rear end noise

2000 Silverado, 5.3L, 4x4, electric shift transfer case, auto transmission, g80 3.73 gear.

Over a year ago I replaced the differential, ring, and pinion gear, and pinion and carrier bearing, I had a great lay out pattern and .005 to .006 backlash when I set it up. I have put 16,782 miles on it.

about 3 months ago it started making a very faint growl, but would clear up in a few miles, and had no vibration. I put it up on jack stands and could not get it to make the noise so I drained it, no flakes or metal in the lube, removed the cover and done a visual inspection(all teeth present no abnormal wear) checked backlash still.005 to.006. closed it up and put fresh lube in it.

yesterday the growl came back only louder.

the gov lock still functions, the truck drives, and the noise goes away after about 3 miles

could this be an axle bearing or is there something more sinister going on?

Thanks guys.

getting ready to do just that, in a day or two I just got a few things out of my storage unit that I will need.

yup after about 2-3 miles it quits hammering. I am thinking front pinion bearing, when the lube gets to it it shuts up.

but for the life of me I can't figure out a reason for when I take the driver side tire off it doesn't make the noise :shakehead: since The passenger side is still on it also tends to make me think it is something to do with the drivers side axle

Sinister is the only description that fits at this point

no way the pinion gets oil and shuts up,makes no sense

tear both rotors off a see ,maybe axle seal puckin on park brake shoes and chatteres up a storm, and after it heats up it stops ,

bet ya !!
