tw1nny03 Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 I have a 2011 SLE Sierra crew cab. Has anyone installed a solenoid to lock the tailgate when u lock your doors? I heard guys with Ford F150s doing this. Not sure if the Sierra can do this or not. I tried searching but couldnt find any info. Thanks, Twin
kstell Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 I installed a Pace Edwards power tailgate lock on my 2007 LTZ a few years ago. Search for this, I am sure they are still around.
uchi Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 what about taking the mechanism from an avalanche and throwing that in?
waumo1 Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Just do a google search on "gmc sierra power tailgate lock" and you will find several manufacturers/sellers. I had one on my 98 Silverado from Dyno Lock and it worked great the whole time I had the truck. Current 2011 has the key lock so I will just use that.
AlaskanSilverado07 Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I agree with Uchi...my 2011 Avalanche has the locking tailgate...nothing like hitting the lock button and all doors plus tailgate lock.
uchi Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 my 09 sierra has the keyed lock but id love to have it powered. wonder i its as simple as just putting in a lock actuator and running power to it. time to google the above topic and see what comes up take a look here, price doesnt seem too bad either http://www.etrailer.com/Locks/GMC/Sierra/2009/PAL8120Q.html?vehicleid=2009305303 heres another. http://www.dynoproducts.net/locks/popnlock/etgl/index.htm seems like around 100 bucks for the kit. im gonna give this some serious thought
TheGrish Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I have a tonneau with auto locks so I added a Pop-N-Lock I picked up from Amazon for $78. Pretty easy install. Unbolt handle, remove bezel, unclip, run harness down tailgate, add new unit and put back together. The unit comes with a relay and all the wiring. Add two wires to battery and tap into two wires at the fuse panel in the cab. There is a short harness at the tailgate that unplugs for removal. I don't know if I could have just tapped into the tonneau cover locks to power the Pop-N-Lock...I decided it best to just follow the directions. Unit works with key or no-key tailgates. Instructions were very clear. After a week I removed the unit and painted it black. I didn't like seeing the shiny metal parts in my handle. So far it has performed as designed. I work out of my truck and it is nice not having to unlock and lock the tailgate several times a day.
uchi Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 thats good to know. do you have the link to the unit you bought?
TheGrish Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 thats good to know. do you have the link to the unit you bought? The Pop & Lock site link: http://www.popandlock.net/index.php?p=product&id=57&parent=81 The picture shown is the actual kit. I found it at Amazon for $78 delivered. I was qouted $225 from a truck outfitter to purchase/install.
uchi Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 right on, gotta love amazon, they have some good deals on stuff. thanks
TheGrish Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 After a few months of daily use my Pop & Lock has started to malfunction. I took it apart and it appears the mechanism is binding on itself. It has power, the solenoid tries to push, but the linkage is binding. I can push it out a little and unbind it and it works fine. There is no adjustment to make and appears to be a design issue. I removed the unit and played around with it on my workbench. I can find no cure for what ails this unit. I am going to leave it removed and can no longer recommend this product. Grish
