Melted Plugs in my buddies Silverado

So a guy from work that I'm friends with has two plugs melted in his truck. We found the one while changing his burnt out Low Beam Bulb. The Plug is melted somewhat, but the new Bulb works. It looked like it burnt up the base of his old bulb causing it to stop working. I also noticed that his under hood light was missing, and the plug for it was also melted and just laying under the hood. Any idea whats causing this? His truck is a 99 Z71 5.3L

Usually when you see this its due to someone using an incorrect bulb (too high of wattage).

That crossed my mind too. The bulb we took out was a regular bulb. The only thing I can think of is maybe someone used a hotter bulb before.

Indication of possible frontal accident damage from a previous owner?

My wife's 99 Malibu went through several tail light plugs because the plugs kept melting off. Could have been a bad bad that year? Around here, most Malibu's from that year drive around with at least 1 tail light out. The plug deforms, and does not make contact with the bulb.

if there is corrosion in the socket it will cause extra resistance which will cause heat, melting the socket over time. when ever i change out bulbs i spray the sockets out good with contact cleaner, and put a lite coat of dielectric grease on the bulb contacts and that seems to help a lot. my 03 sockets show no heat damage at all..

He said he found glass in the drivers side floor before so that could be possible.
