I just need to vent.

So, I have had my truck for 4 months. I bought it GM certified thought it was a nice truck. My problems started out little, squeaky brakes and the passenger side molding falling off. Now it idles very rough, the cruise control and factory remote start only works when they feel like it and to top it all off, it ticks on cold mornings and it burns a quart of oil every 2500 miles. I knew these trucks had a lifter/oil problem and I was willing to take that risk, but I am still upset. Does anybody have any ideas on the idle/funky electronics problems? Despite all the problems I love this truck. but I'm about 1 more stupid little problem away from having a dealer find me a 6.2.

I've only had time to bring it over once for the brake noise, the idle and the window switch not working. They could not duplicate the problems. The ticking, cruise control and remote start just started within the last week. And I fixed the door molding.

What does the "certified" get you? Sorry about the issues, hopefully you can get them resolved and enjoy the ownership

Miles? If you're still in power-train warranty, so you need to get the oil consumption checked officially.

I bought mine certified which gives you a 1 year 10K mile bumper to bumper (at least when I bought mine). I went over mine with a fine tooth comb and dropped it off with a list of issues that they fixed. Be persistent and don't hesitate to elevate the issues with GM, your dealer is for certain going to drag their feet on this...

I even had the dealer replace all of the seat fabric based on the TSB that you can find on this site. That one took some bitching and one call to GM customer service to get handled.

Yeah it just cracked 50,000 miles. I have the gm certified and power train warranty left and I plan on taking it back to them with a list of complaints like you did. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to get the oil consumption documented? I just had the oil changed. Should I bring it to the dealer now and show them it's full and then show them in 5000 miles when it's down 2 quarts? I took a video of the motor ticking in the morning so I have proof of that.

I'm not really sure, since I've read it both ways on here. Mine has never used oil, so I haven't dealt with the dealer on it. Just to know, the spec is 1 qt in 2000 miles, so you're close. Also, if it's dropping 2 qts before you add any, that may be your noise problem. The hydraulic lifters can be loud if they don't have oil feeding them right at startup. Edit: they can be "noisy" under normal conditions at first start, until the oil flows freely and fills all the voids. It shouldn't be too loud, and shouldn't last too long (10 secs maybe).

I like your idea of looking for a 6.2

Its to bad you can't get a 6.2 in a RCSB that would be one killer truck.

I agree with this.

It was ticking when it was down 2 quarts, which is what made me check my oil (I feel terrible I let it get that low without checking it) But it is now full of Ams Oil and still doing it. It is only on extremely cold days and only for a couple seconds. So this is normal with these trucks? I guess I'm just not used to this because my old truck had 178,000 miles on it and didn't tick or burn oil. And I agree with you guys a RCSB would be an awwwwwsome truck. Maybe GM will build one to compete with the RAM Express, depending on how well it does.

I had questions for the service dept after I purchased my 07 Sierra about the so called checklist before it put on the lot. First was checking freezing point for antifreeze according to them its supposed to be at -40. Mine was -5. no offer to rectify that. Second was brake inspection. They said they do a Non Wheel removal inspection!!!! Now I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I have had mechanical experience. I ask how does that work with rear drum brakes. The answer I got was "Best Guess". Needless to say this was the 1rst time and my last time with this dealer in my home town.

So this is normal with these trucks?

Depends on how "loud". The tick I'm familiar with isn't loud at all, and my '99 5.3 did the same thing sometimes (especially when cold, after sitting a while).

    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
    • It’s at the point of amusement. I’m retired I have time. It’s fun seeing people try to convince me I’m using oil. I’m buying oil at the prescribed time. It gets drained and new goes in. Do I add in between, no. My oil doesn’t even get dirty in 5k miles. I don’t even see any drop on the stick. I check in the same place. All is well.
