Fuel Pump Died ...

Yep, on my 03 Sierra. On the interstate. Hardly any warning. Just as I was coming up to an exit, so I got off but nothing there. A woman in a 2500HD came by and said there is a Chevy dealer 8 miles down the road in Winnsboro, SC. Got an old wrecker to tow me there and they are fixing it right now. Super fortunate that it died at the right place, on the right day and the dealer was open and could fix it. About $700, but it could have been worse.

Oh, and happy new year!

136,000 miles.

Then, when they were testing it, they said it wouldn't start a couple of times and had to bang on the starter to get it to work. So, I guess I'd better replace the starter too.

Jesus 700 bucks!? I'd rather take the hour and a half to do the work myself and save $630.

You gonna do a complete fuel pump swap in 1.5 hrs by yourself? I'd like to see that? :-) Especially on a 9 year old truck. The price is fair for the parts and labor. Fuel pumps are wicked expensive. The pump on my Malibu was $300 alone.

I did it twice over the summer...there's only 8 bolts holding the bed down, unhook grounds, and the fuel neck. Time to get a few friends and take the whole bed off or you can just slide it over to one side and pivot the bed up. From there knock the retainer ring around the fuel pump counterclockwise till it pops up then just pull out the whole sending unit. Also the AC Delco EP-381 fuel pump is only about $70 from Summit Racing

Well, if I was home, I probably would have replaced it. But the whole unit, not just the pump, is $400 -$500 list for a GM one. The one they put in was from NAPA because they did not have one in stock. And yes, you might be able to just replace the pump and not the whole unit. I have done that on other cars. But I was 3 hours from home and didn't have time to shop around. And they dropped the tank instead of lifting the bed. The manager said it was about the same amount of work.
