Strange Strange problem

I really hope someone can point me in the right direction here.. I just purchased a 2007 2500 HD crew cab about 3 weeks ago, this probelm I am having has happend about 3 times since. Every once and a while I will jump in it to go and I pull the shifter down into gear and nothing.. its not shifting.. The gear shift handle feels like the cable is broke or something, the lever basicly just flops down..(i think the indicator is moving but cant say for sure) I have tried shutting the key on and off but it stays the same, no shift. I had a buddy sit in it and try to shift while I look under the truck and the cable where it connect to the trans is not moving. In order to get it to work again I have someone sit it in with the brakes on while I manualy engage reverse on the transmission.. after that It will work just fine for a while.. (the previous owner did say the shift cable had been replaced but I dont know how long ago, The truck currently has about 115,000 miles. help please....

Sounds like it needs a cable, or cable needs adjusted.

there is no adjustment except fo the allison,and if it has always done it then the guy never put the 2 halves together properly,,,

take a look under where the cable attaches to the tranny and see if its flopping around ........

also remove the drivers knee bolter and look at the other end near the shifter lever

Thanks for the replies guys, I will look around underneath, where the two halves connect, but what is weird is it does not always do this, only every now and then, if it was a improberly set cable wouldnt it do it all the time? Like I said about once a week or so..

well it happend again.. this time i watched the gear shift indicator and the indicator was not moving....It stayed in park, while the gear shift lever flopped around.. I also was able to look up under the dash where the cable attaches to the steering colum and it was moving and the cable was being pulled.. so I guess I will start with a new shift cable and see where it goes from there. Afetr I layed under the truck and engaged it by hand on the trans its been working fine..
