Looking for some information.

On a 2011 silverado ltz with the sunroof, and no dvd, the roof bulges where the dome light is (behind the sunroof)

Im curious if and how an aftermarket overhead dvd player would be installed. (whats under this bulge?)

I think it's just the housing for the lights then the chamber for the glass+ motor. Don't think it would be too hard. Have you ever considered the DVD in Headrest? I love the look of those, my factory DVD player rattles alot and the picture quality isn't the best that's why I'd consider that option if I was installing a DVD player.

In your truck, it's probably empty. I have a Sierra, and the DVD screen folds down from there, and then folds back up into the bulge.

i considered the headrests but an aftermarket overhead is a lot cheaper. I have one in my current truck and have no complaints

i was thinking it was hollow as well.....if so, it could be cut out i take it

Having done about 100 overhead DVD installs in the Silverado/Tahoe/Suburban etc., I know this one very well.

There is nothing under that bulge except the mounting bar for the factory overhead monitor (which is a GREAT mounting surface if you're considering on overhead DVD - you can hang on it!).

If you wanted to mount an overhead unit, you have to consider a couple things: You have to cut that entire bulge out to allow something to sit flush on the headliner, and when you do, the hole gets REALLY big, so you have to make certain whatever you buy will cover the hole you've cut out.

We use the Rosen Z-10 overhead DVD almost exclusively in these and they tend to look really nice (pictures here), but they require extreme precision to get them to sit flush and look right.

I agree with snarkee, it takes alot of percision to cut out and make it look right. you probably are looking at the same price range for the head rest or the over head dvd player. And most over head that i've installed seem to rattle alot when driving. while with the head rest you don't have this problom and it doesn't take away from your rear view mirror!

To add to the headrest idea here: The majority of DVD systems that we do for local GM dealers are headrest DVD systems, mainly because with any headrest system you install, you don't modify the truck in any way, you can play two sources at one time and you can take them with you when you sell/trade the truck. With an overhead unit, it's one source and it stays in the truck no matter what because you just cut a really big hole in the headliner...

With the Rosen and Advent systems (the only two we sell - we don't deal with lower-end stuff for our dealers, so I can't comment on those), they are a direct match for the factory headrest in terms of color and stitching, and the same electronics package fits in any headrest "bun" they make, so you can remove them when you sell the truck and put your old headrests in the old truck and wave goodbye, then either move them into your next vehicle by replacing only the "buns" to match the cloth/leather color of your next rig or you can even sell them on Ebay if you don't want to move them.

Of course, they're more expensive up front, but you have to decide for yourself if it's worth it in terms of keeping the kids happy for the time you own the rig. For instance, what if you have an 8 year old boy and a five year old girl watching a single overhead DVD - what do you play that they both want to watch? Nothing. It's fight time... In the long run, you'll end up spending less for headrests than for an overhead if you decide up front that you will pull them out when you're done with the truck - then you'll have a system you can sell or move to the next rig without the major expense of doing it all over again - you only have to spend a couple hundred on new buns for the new rig...

Plus 1 for headrests - whomever is watching won't have a sore neck from looking up at a headliner mounted display for extended periods while bouncing down the road.
