Installng a HAM into my 2010 GMC Sierra

Hey group,

What is the best way to run from the cab of my truck through the firewall to the battery and antenna?

Is the only way to drill through? If so, where is a good location and how hard is it?

Thanks,

Kevin

Drummingchevy had a post about his ham radio. Maybe he can chime in

What cb are you running and what kind of power are you talking about?

Read my post a few down. Im having alot of RF interference with my aftermarket kenwood dvd/nav.

I have a 62" wilson 1000 magmount on my roof and I came into the cab through the 3ed brake light. I drilled a hole in the firewall for power wires among other wires for other things.

Where are you?

The radio is a Yaeiseu FT-7100 dual band radio. It really prefers a line straight from the battery. My thought is that I have to drill through the fire wall. I will mount the antenna off the front passenger side for better attenuation.

I am just wondering if there is a hole somewhere I can poke through and where is good to run it?

I will mount the radio by the passengers legs.

I am in Calgary, Alberta Canada.

I noticed there are at least a few existing plugs towards the middle and one towards the rear of my extended cab underside. These open to the inside of the cabs, underneath the carpet. I will be running my heavy gauge wiring through the middle of the cab, left side one when the time comes.

In otherwords,I do not think I will be drilling and plugging, just running a few more feet of wire.

You might try tracing the parking brake cable. I think people have snaked cables through that in the past.

My other topic: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=142079 It's got some pictures of how I mounted my antenna and hid the wires under the dash. As for going through the firewall, I didn't do that; I just ran all the wires between the door and the weather seal, taking care not to bend them too much. If you need any more pics or have questions, let me know (preferably in this thread).

Wouldn't that wear away at the wire's insulation over time? Just a thought, especially considering that damage of that nature can decrease radio performance.
