Should I Use Tow/Haul mode?

I am pretty sure the manual says T/H mode is only really useful when towing 75% of the rated capacity? I think that is what I read.

I guess that is kind of why/what I was wondering. There has to be a point at which it is beneficial and a point at which it doesn't really matter.

Thanks for the responses.

Some of you guys are putting more thought than you should into this. If anything if your going to be going up any grades you definitely want to put it in "3" or "5" depending on your transmission.

Your trailer is more than 2000 lbs heavier than what I towed. At 5500 lbs I'd probably run T/H too depending on how the truck behaived. My point is just that T/H as a blanket recommendation with any trailer is a bit silly.

Agree, it's a lot silly. No need to use T/H mode unless your truck feels like it's really getting a workout.

I don't understand why some people think that T/H mode needs to be used if something is connected to the truck, or if you have something in the bed, it doesn't make sense to me.

T/H mode is for pulling HEAVY loads. There is absolutely NO benefit of using it when you are not pulling or hauling a heavy load. GM actually recommends it's use ONLY when pulling heavy loads.

have a '11 Sierra Denali w.6.2. i towed 8K with my '07 SD/6.2 and didn't use TH because the engine braking was insane, it would literally put me hard into the seatbelts just touching the brake. my 11 doesn't do this now, as the crazy engine braking is fixed now, however my trailer got lighter to arounrd 6K, so I don't need TH at all now unless i'm in the mountians. as others have said here, use it if you want, or i you don't want to, doesn't matter much until you get to the upper ranges of max. towing limit.

Use it for a bit to see how it feels and if you get to the point where your truck keep shifting or you feel it works better in t/h, or you get to some good hills.

As far as flat interstate use it to get on the interstate but while cruising down it I doubt you will need it.

I don't need to use it when I am towing my boat (~ 3500 lbs), but I choose to simply because it changes the 'tap to turn' from 3 blinks to 6, which gives ample time to change lanes with the trailer in tow.

It also makes taking off easier. I have towed my boat both with and without, and I can't tell a mpg difference, so I use it.

It does seem to help with takeoff. But I usually lock it down to 3, cause it's so hilly here it'll always be hunting if I don't.

My last boat (pictured below) had horrbile trailer brakes so I used T/H when in traffic to help with stopping. New boat has great brakes so i don't need it. I will use the T/H if I feel the truck is hunting for gears.

Your old boat setup looks a lot nicer than my current one.

Get any pics of the new ones yet?

if it doesn't rain today, will be getting some pics of the new combo today. (crossing fingers)

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
