07 Rear diff blown...

Hi all I need a little input. Ok so I have a 2007 GMC Sierra Classic Z71 with 120,000 KM on it and yesterday the retaining pin fell out inside the Diff and took chunks off my Ring and Pinion gears. The fluid had metal all in it. The truck is only five years old and now I am looking at a pretty big bill.

I have never done a brake stand, burn out or towing with this truck so I can't understand how this happened.

So I just have a couple questions to the members here.

1. Is this common issue with this model year truck or is there issues with it's design?

2. Has this happen to anyone on here?

I have a 1987 Olds Cutlass and it was used as a daily driver for 20 years before I rebuilt the rear end and the only reason why I rebuilt it was to put in better gears.

That was an issue with early 2011 model. GM stopped sales and recalled trucks to fix it. GM diffs have had issues with the bolt holding the pin in breaking for decades. Difference was, the break was at the end of the threads so the pin was still retained. Was not uncommon to have to cut the retaining pin out to change axle seals.
