How much power can the allison hold??

I recently finished the raylar cam install, and the truck runs great.. Im having stainless works make me a set of 1 7/8 long tubes and a free install in ohio in sept,

the reason im asking about the allison was , raylar has a 103 kit that makes almost 525hp with tuning, the 106 kit is over 550 HP...So how much is the allison going to safely handle without slipping and stressing it.

Having owning a 2004 lly D-Max before I sold it and belong to the Diesel forums it can safely handle about 60-80 HP over stock and that over time will limp the tranny if that extra HP is used quite frequent. Once you limp the Allison it will be easier to do it more often. Anything over 80 HP you will need to beef up the tranny. With HP numbers that high I can bet they used a Suncoast modded tranny. A stock Allison WILL NOT handle 550 HP for any lenght of time.

Your looking at about 1800 for the bottom line low end kit but you have to do it yourself, a whole tranny ready to go is around 6-7 grand. But like I said the stock Allison running stock HP numbers is Bullet proof but once you start going up on HP and you slip the tranny (limp mode) the next time will be easier to limp it and so on then the next thing your inside the tranny with your wallet.

IDK about HP. My Dmax is only putting out 375 HP but it is making 750 ft lbs of torque. I am sure your 8.1L will never make that kind of torque.

Ill be close.. If i do the raylar 106 kit, and its tuned right ill be over 550 hp.. so the tq would be close to 700 im sure.

Yukon 25008.1,

Sorry buddy, not trying to rob your post. You did comment on my question about the allison issue. Found this in my search. I do have a Diablo Predator programmer on stage 3. It claims 80 HP. When I first bought it, like a moron, I set it on stage 5 to try it out. I gave it about 1/2 throttle and it put my tranny into limp mode. I immediately reset the tranny, turned it down to stage 3, where it has sat for 3 years. According to Silverado 4x4, once you limp it out, it tends to be a lot more prone to doing it again. I imagine when it sees a torque surge it temorary limps itself for protection. I think after researching this, I may do a screw-on filter change and just remove the programmer all together.

i've seen lbz and lly's putting out 700 hp with the allison holding up...over that i'd start beefing it up

What a false statement that is, a 5 speed ally won't take 450 rwhp for long before it starts to limp over and over. A 6 speed ally will take 500rwhp for a little while but not forever, no way. I know alot of duramax owners, and I am one myself...never have I heard anyone put down 700hp on a stock tranny....it might work for a bit but you could NOT put your foot in it...it would limp everytime...

It will last a bit, save some money for the "oh shit I broke.... " fund...it will limp eventually. Once it does your screwed...it will happen over and over. Look into a suncoast GMAX. I don't know what converter would be best for a gasser but my truck has 1056...

Is it possible to reset the TCM? It limped out once, sounds like there may be no going back? Would a complete T/C and tranny flush help?

It sounds like the limp mode part of the tranny is like an electrical breaker... once it trips, it did its job and is weaker and will trip more often from that point on.
