towing capacity 2007 sierra 4800???--10,200????

I have a 2007 GMC Sierra SLT it is 2x4 has a 5.3l engine with a towpackage and 20 inch rims from dealer. I am planning a trip cross country and I am looking at Trailers to haul, My problem is my truck is only rated at 4800 pounds for towing. I know I have a class 3 hitch and I am being told my truck can pull a lot more if I got a class 4 or 5 which I am willing to do but is that all that is holding me back from towing more??? I have seen some stats that show my truck towing up to 10,200 pounds with the right equipment but they dont mention what that equipment is and I am kinda new to towing. any help or imput would be a great help

Do you have the original owners manual? If you do that would tell you everything you need to know.

However...

Did you buy this truck new? I'm curious in regards to if the truck came from the factory with the tow pack or if someone added it. I don't think your truck came with a class 3 hitch from factory, should have already been a class 4/5, but I could easily be wrong. The right hitch, gears, engine, trans cooler, wheels and tires are all factored into a tow rating. We will need more factory specs (rear gear ratio, options or "RPO" codes) in order to help you more effectively.

Looks like for your truck it varies anywhere from 7,000 to 8,200 lbs. towing,I need to know what gears you have, and the cab and bed you have (IE-Reg cab-Long bed,Ext.cab-std bed, etc) to give you the correct capacity.

10,200 lbs. would be for a 2wd truck with the "NHT" VortecMAX trailering package, which included the 6.0 liter engine and 3:73 gears.

Thanks guys, I did buy the truck new and it came with everything from the dealer but I do know the dealer put the 20 inch rims and a chrome package on it. I dont know if the dealer put the towing package or if it came from the factory like that. It is a crew cab and the book it came with seemed to be wrong already about a few things so I suspect i got a owners manuel from the 2007 classic style vs the new body style my truck is. I dont know about the gears how can I find out??

Either post me the last 8 digits of your VIN and I can run a build sheet on it,or get all the "G" codes on the SPID label in the glove-box and let me know what they are (IE-GU6 would be 3.42,GT4 would be 3.73,GT5 would be 4.10,etc.)

it is 71659538 I hope that helps. My ultimate goal is to be able to tow around or up to 7000 pounds. I am willing to make upgrades if need be but just want to make the right ones.

Thanks,

Dale,

Would you be so kind as to look up the towing capacity for my truck as well. It is a 2008 1500 5.3 4x4 CCSB 4L60-E 3.73 gears with Z85 and the towing package, but not the NHT package. Last 8 digits of the VIN are 8G280105. My truck came with an owners manual, unfortunately the manual I have only covers the Denali models. Funnily enough the GM website for downloading the manual also only has the Denali manual available.

Thanks,

DKJ

EDIT to add. Tires and wheels are factory 265/70-17

Gu5 is 3.23, not much of a towing gear, if it's an 07 I would imagine it has the 4l60e, 4800 lbs sounds about right.

Your truck is rated for 4,600 lbs towing.......You have 3.23 gearing, you also have the 4.8-V8 and not the 5.3,that hurts towing as well.

Unfortunately with cost factor in mind, upgrading could be more expensive than trading to a different truck.
