1998 vortec 1500 starting problems

i have a 1998 gmc vortec v8 1500 and for some reason lately it wants to sometimes have to be started a couple of times before it runs. it will seem to start to run but then it dies and you have to start it agian. but other times it will start on the first time. also sometimes when you start turning it over it hits and backfires, then you have to crank it a couple of times to start it. this just starteda couple of months ago and im a little puzzled by it, even other people i have asked.
