Bad news for my beast.

I am incredibly  :uhoh: dismayed.  I took the beast to the dealer last nite because a noise coming from my rearend at all speeds.  Sounded like metal on metal rubbing.  I had a bad feeling about it.  Well, I took the technician on a quick ride with me, and he immediately said rear differential.  I gulped, and took us back to the dealer.  I left it over nite, and they are looking at it now.  They are taking apart the rear, and inspecting everything.  I am out of warranty so this can very quickly get expensive  :urgent:  It is going to cost $200 just to take it apart and inspect it.

Point of this story, keep my truck and me in your prayers, because the LAST thing I need is a bill for $2500 to replace my rearend.

I'd assume they put them in right, but they may have put to much pre-load on the pinion.

I guess you'll have to see what the stealer says, keep us updated.

Will keep you posted.  What is pre-load?  I am not at all a "gear head", so any knowledge I have, when I talk to the stealer, will help in question asking.  How does it work?

Pre-load is placed on the pinion, to pre-load the bearings, and in some cases, not sure if it applies to chevs, it did on my old toyota. Anyways the pinion teeth need to mate to the ring gear for proper contact.

You could check out http://www.howstuffworks.com/

those guys can explain it better than I.

HEY KASPAR139

If you've got noise comming from your rearend that sounds like metal on metal you are in trouble.

Better lay off the Taco Bell food for awhile.

Sorry jsut had to make a pun.

Sorry about the problems with your truck I know the feeling.

It's only money, fix it whatever it takes and you will feel better having a healthy truck than you would having a healthy wallet.

Amen brother.  That was a pretty fun pun.  Seriously, every time I write the word "rearend" it makes me laugh!  Simple pleasures.  I will be nice to have the truck back and ready to roll.

Here is what the dealer said after they took the rear diff apart, the inner pinion bearing slipped (out?) and damaged my gears.  So, they are replacing it all.  Total bill including taxes $1645.  I also had a torn cv boot seal, costing another $250.  They are taking me to the cleaners, but c'est la vie.

Beer me.  I love that truck.  However, the wife is quickly hating it.

The local dealer in my town gets $74.00/hour labor charge. You are lucky in the respect. that the cause of the problem is known and readily repaired. I hate those intermittent problems that are hard to find. The truck has to be taken in spends a day in the service bay only to have something changed that "might" fix the problem. That doesn't do much for my confidence.

To paraphrase a 70's comic book theme.

Life with truck and no money is better than life with money and no truck.

Not sure how the heck an inner bearing slips out.

Bearings are pressed onto the pinion,(The inner one is anyway) with like a ten ton press.

Did you get a chance to look at your parts?

you should get them before you leave the dealer, and perhaps take them to the guys that installed your gears, sounds like they might be responsiable.

You have thicker skin then I, If they handed me a bill like that I'd want to reach over the counter grap the guy by the neck and ring it out.

Thats why I won't let my dealer do squat to my truck.

I like how they charge you like 75 an hour, and some tire change guy making 5 bucks an hour does the work.

Very true about ringing the guys neck, but I don't know enough about the differential "insides" to be able to argue or look at the parts and tell them otherwise.  However, that how stuff works website was very cool and informative.

If I can, I will get the old parts when I go in, and verify the situation.  I will take some pictures of the stuff, and show ya'll.

Thanks for your advice/support. :thumb:
