Removing Airbag on 1999 Sierra

Gliss

Question

Posted

I posted this question in wrong Forum earlier.

My horn does not work, the problem is in the wheel, maybe the contacts need cleaning or a wire.

My question is how to remove the airbag??

I know there are 2 slits on the rear of steering wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock.

Thanks in advance

Turn the wheel so the slots are at your 12 & 6. Stick a flat blade screwdriver in the slot, then turn 90° while pulling the airbag toward you. There's a wire spring retainer that will lift out of the notch when you turn the screwdriver.

Thank You Very Much !!!!! The rectabgular slot is about 1 1/2 long. Is it in the middle? I will find it by trial and error.

I appreciate this very much. I could get any info from mechanics, dealer, etc. I remembered I joined this forum years ago, when I had my Silverado.

Thanks

Doug

Sorry forgot one question.

Is it neccessary to pull cable off battery and wait 15 minutes? Can I just disconnect yellow wire under steering column instead??

Thanks

Thanks again for the information. I will use a small mirror to help me see. I was going to disconnect battery and wait 15 minutes.

Depending on which way you turn the wheel, the opening will be on either the left or the right of the slot. Helps to have a mirror to see what your doing.

Just to be safe I would disconnect the battery & wait.

When you set the airbag down after removal, make sure the bag is up. That way if it were to go off, it won't go flying. It won't likely happen but be safe.
