Reloading, Who does, single press, multi?

Hello, Currently looking at a Ruger SR-556 or a similar setup in 6.8SPC or 5.56mm. The cheapest ammo I can find is Wolf .223 1000rds for 300$, which equates out to .30 a rd. I'm in experienced with reloading, but what have you guys been doing, and what is the cost effectiveness per round. I would also like to be able to convert the set-up over to reload a .270 WSM as I own a T3 stainless.laminet for my deer gun, and the ammo runs 30-45$ a box of 20.

 

Suggestions? Past Experiences, maybe even where do you buy your current ammo and how much does it average per round.

You can save pennies per round if you buy hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of reloading equipment, then spend more on a shop setup, and hours per 100 rounds to reload. I did. For volume shooting, take a look at the Dillon stuff. Add all the equipment prices and then add some more for shop benches and cabinets, etc. Calculate how many rounds it will take to recoup your money.

 

I've reloaded off and on for 40 years. I have a significant amount of equipment for pistol, rifle and shotgun ammo. It's a double edged sword. Better for certain things like accurate rifle loads and special pistol loads, not such a great thing for saving money, in my opinion.

My lee press has defiantly paid itself off. alot of people are agaInst lee but all sIngle stage press are the same. If you go progressive invest In something like a Dillon. The problem is all 556 brass have crimped primers which are a pain to handle. As cheep as 556 it is not worth loading. I have saved a lot loading my 308 and 45 rounds.

I agree, you may not save money by reloading because you will shoot a lot more and therefore end up spending more by shooting more. However if you enjoy the whole process of developing loads, working for accuracy, etc it is a great hobby in addition to shooting.

 

As for progressive loaders, I have a Dillon RL-550B and have cranked out many thousands of rounds of 45 ACP and 38 Special on it and highly recommend it.

 

I also use a Lee Turret press and their cast O frame press and recommend them. However a buddy gave me a Lee Pro-1000 progressive press. I thought I would use it for 38 Super since I don't load as many of those. I don't recommend this product at all, it is more grief than good. So if you are buying a progressive press, just skip the toys and buy a good one to start with.

cost to get into a single stage press set-up? And I ended up buying a Rock River Arms 18" elite operator 2, with a Nikon 223 mount and a 3-9 Leupold AR scope. If I can get it to a break even point after a few years even it would be worth it, As I see it as a hobby and something to get my brother and nephew into as well.

You can get a lot of answers to this but probably for about $200 you can get a kit, a set of dies and what you need to turn out good reloads for one cartridge. Your consumables will be on top of that. I suggest going to a site like Midwayusa.com and doing some research. A reloading kit is a good way to start. Then you can add/replace items if you become interested long term or sell/gift the whole kit to somebody if you decide it is not for you.

 

The Lyman Reloading Handbook is an excellent manual tor beginners. It has everything you need to know in one book including recipes.

If you are going to load .556 (don't sell yourself short and load 223 load for your ar 556 is a hotter round) you will need the press, dies, case prep tools ie case trimers, primer pocket uniformedr, case neck decrying tool. You will need a good powder thrower, and scale to dial in you thrower. I would highly recommend a hand primer. You will absolutely need a Dillon super swaget 600 to correctly remove the primer crimp or you will constantly crush primers with a risk of an explosion in your hand with how ever mantra primers in the tray. You will also need a current load guide and calipers to measure your over all length. Oal is very important to shorthopedic it build higher pressures from the bullet being set to deep kaboom. Case length important as well to long and you risk the case pinching the bullet on the rifle lands and kaboom. Since you will be loading for a auto loader thebonly dies tough need is a seater, full length sizer and I would highly recommend a universal recapping die. Trust me when full length sizing it is harder to tell if you found a berdan primed case. I apologize fir throwing so much out there and I hope it makes since. Take you time it is a gre at and fun hobby just don't rush mistakes here are deadly.

This is my loading set up. It isn't extravagant as I just us a lee single stage breech lock press.

I also forgot to mention that you need a tumbler, load block, case lube and a powder trickled if you want to weigh every charge fir natch rounds.

you can't do it because your trying to save money. You do it to make better ammo that is taylored to your gun and needs that the run of the mill ammo cannot provide. For example i have a 185 gr hallow point load for my .45 that shoots about 1100 fps, that is smoking for a .45 since a factory load is between 650 and 800 fps. 1100fps in a 45 will put someone on there a@@. This is a hobby for a hobby lol.

Thank you, and yea i realized that, it would probably take along time to come to a break even point basically only reloading 5.56mm, but I do like it as a hobby, I gotta re-finish nursing school (Currently LPN, finishing up my RN) and then make some room out in the garage to start with a setup.. but i'll probably start piecing together the equipment I need now that i can get my hands on.. And for that 45.. ACP or Colt?

I have had and still do have both. I started with a R.C.B.S. Rock Chucker my folks gave me for my 14th X-mas along with a scale and powder measure of same make. I still use them and assemble all of my rifle rounds for competition and hunting on them as well as Magnum handgun ammunition.

 

I used to have a R.C.B.S. ammo master progressive that worked pretty well, I now have a Hornady AP progressive but don't have the bench built yet to mount it, working on that.

 

Rifle rounds and magnum hangun rounds I load on the single stage so I can check, check, and double check every detail. It is just what I prefer but I know other shooters that happily load away plenty of 223 or 308 on progressives.

LIke others have said you don't necessarily reload to save money since everything you "save" goes right back into more supplies. You do however shoot more for less. I don't remember what my buddy said he reloads .223 for but it was somewhere between $15-$20 per 100 rounds. For me since I cast my own bullets with wheel weights I get for free from a tire shop I think I'm doing all my pistol rounds (.357/.38spl, 9mm, .380, .44mag/spl, .40, and .45acp) for between $5-$10 per 100. So if you look at just the consumables vs buying retail you can save quite a bit. The kicker is always how much is your time worth to you?

 

As far as advice goes if you going to be wanting low volume high accuracy loads single press is generally the way to go. If you plan on shooting a lot of rounds then a multi-stage press is a better choice. You can however reload a lot of rounds with a single stage, my buddy and I started out on a single stage but were beyond thankful when his parents got him a Dillon 550b. Made making 400 rounds a week a heck of a lot faster and easier. Personally I use a Dillon 650 right now and probably wouldn't go back to a 550b again. One day I'll pick up a second 650 if I can find a used one cheap enough. Downside to the 650 vs the 550 is the tool heads/conversion kits are around 1.5-2x the ones for the 550b.

 

If you want to buy your supplies online remember that with powder and primers you will almost always pay a shipping charge + a $20 hazmat fee. I can't remember offhand but I want to say 70lbs is the max weight per hazmat shipment. One way to maximize your money is to buy in bulk once you figure out what you want so that it offsets the shipping charges. Another way is to do a group order so that shipping is split X amount of ways. Wait for sales when maybe you'll get the normal shipping charge free and only have to pay the hazmat. Or the other way around, I know midsouth sent me an email a couple months back saying they'd pay the hazmat fee. Midwayusa gives you a discount on a lot of stuff site wide every year on your birthday so you could wait for that too. Depending on how close and how much for entrance, a gun show can be a good place to get supplies, especially bullets which weigh quite a bit and cost to ship. Find a local shop near you as well.

 

Midwayusa.com and midsouthshooterssupply.com are two I get emails from. Haven't bought anything from midsouth yet though. If you look on amazon you can get a frankford arsenal tumbler pretty cheap and mine has been going strong for 2 years now and well over 20k pieces of brass cleaned.

    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package. 
    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.  
    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
