TRUCK NEEDS WORK

Recommended Posts

My truck needs some work so my mechanic gave me this estimate:

Replace front/rear calipers

Replace fuel pump

Replace brake lines with stainless

replace fuel filler neck (rusted at filler inlet)

replace fuel lines

I'm very concerned about rusted brake lines happening when i'm driving, i have 120k miles and live in the North East which is notorious for rust because of the chemicals used to clear streets in winter. So i thought as long as their under there replacing the brake lines, might as well do the calipers and fuel at the same time. One and done. He says he will have to tie up the truck for 2-3 days. He says he will have to drop the fuel tank to do the brake lines, thus the fuel replacement items

Parts $2100

Labor $1300

Tax $200

Total $3600

Too much? About right?

I do plan on keeping the truck for some time. I am going to get an estimate from the local GMC dealer and one other estimate from another local garage but I thought i would ask you folks what you think of the cost.

I purchased new rotors, calipers and ss braided brake lines for my 2001 Z28 (Sara), and had a local mom and pop shop install everything in 2 hrs. labor ($150 total).

Why are you replacing calipers? I live in NH and we use plenty of salt on the roads in the winter but have never heard of it eating calipers. The rest sounds reasonable work to do but not so sure about the prices. Is the truck worth that much? I've seed a few good looking GMT 800s for sale in the 5k range lately.
