1997 Chevy Cheyenne 1500 series, starting after rain/humidity, etc.

Recommended Posts

Posting this for hubby who is at work. Ongoing problem, have taken it to 3 different mechanics, but not to a dealership. This is a Chevy Cheyenne, 1500 Series, 6 cyl. Runs fine once it starts, can crank and turn off all day long. But if there is ANY humidity or rain, and truck goes for more than 10 hours (overnight), it won't start. Then have to put a heater under it for a couple of hours to dry it out, before it will start again. If it's cranked around 11 pm, it will usually start in the morning, unless there's a full on rain storm/humidity. Live at the beach so humid is common here,

Last mechanic put it on their computer, and still couldn't figure out what was causing this. he kept it 6 working days, and was as frustrated as the others. Said to take it to the dealership, they knew things they didn't release to others about situations like this.

Hubby is really crazy over this. Loves this truck. Runs FINE except for this. Does anyone have any ideas as to why or how to fix?

thanks,

seablue

Forgot to add the things that have been replaced in the last year: tune up (2 weeks ago), plugs and wires, distributor cap, Ignition coil, fuel pump.

The last mechanic, who worked on it longer than any others, now thinks it may be an ignition wire exposed somewhere. Admits he doesn't have a clue though, and said go to a dealership. Wondering if the dealers computers are any different than others, though.

The computer would not pick up any exposed wires..... Load up the engine compartment with a silicone spray over all the wiring.

And I mean coat the whole thing with at least two cans. This will help keep out the moisture. Cannot hurt anything and it should work.

If you get all the clips, wires, etc with the silicone spray it keeps out the moisture, so repeat in 3 months the same application.

Nissan Pathfinder my wife drove needed it done all the time so it would work too.
