XD Wheel Quality?

I know these wheels seem to be popular. Does anyone care to chime chime in on XD Series wheel quality? Either black or chrome?

I would think the black ones would be more durable but I'm not sure.

I'm curious to hear from the people in the north that may run these wheels in winter. I'm leaning towards chrome. I know they have 3yr finish warranty but they also have a clause in the warranty about the finish pitting due to weather conditions. This pretty much makes the warranty useless IMO unless they have really really good customer service.

I know any wheel is going to require a lot of maintenance in winter but swapping really isn't really a good solution in my case. So, please lets not turn this into a thread about swapping wheels in winter. I don't mind washing the wheels in winter but.....there would be a few period of time where they could have salt on them for 2-3 days here and there. I've been reading on different ideas on how to protect them in winter. Really I'd like to keep them looking good about 4 years. I just don't want them flaking after 1 season.

When I was wheel shopping, I talked to guys who owned black XD's (monster, addict, and hoss)....and all were very happy with them. I would have bought a set, but the size & offset I wanted was on backorder in my area....so I went with the Moto's instead. I can't vouch for the chrome XD's though.

Funny I have wanted the on the XD SPY or Moto Metal 951's for a while. Both seem to be decent companies. The XD's have a slight edge though.

The only other wheel I thought of was the CK375 20" chrome repro by OE but they are about $940. That's not much less than the 20" chrome XD Spy or Moto Metal 951. Only about $250 difference. I have a set of OE wheels currently on one of my other cars but its not a daily driver. For a truck driven daily I'd rather go with a name brand like XD or Moto.

I posted the same question on the Avalanche forum and one person did tell me that the Black/Machine XD's like the Spy's are actually painted, then the machine parts are milled and the whole wheel is cleared. In that person's case the clear was starting to crack a bit or get some lines in it. I didn't know the gloss black and machine XD's were cleared. I assumed the aluminum finish was bare and the black area was just black.

This avalanche is really what made me even consider the black/machine XD Spy's

granted mine isn't orange it's granite blue but i have the body color door pulls, mirror caps, and black running boards. I also have Refinish Restorer on my plastics so they are nice and black. I think it looks good.

I would agree. I actually prefer a gun metal grey and machine wheel if its painted but I can't find one in an 18" or 20"

I even thought about getting a black/ machine wheel and redoing the black body color. Not necessarily the XD's though

On the other hand flaking and putting chrome looks pretty horrible too so yeah it is what it is I guess

I had a pair of black rockstars on my old truck and the chrome pieces (starts, simulated studs) all deteriorated rather quickly over the period of two winters.

I replaced the center caps once and they lasted another 2 winters.

I've read that quite a bit on other forums that the center caps tend to flake a lot. I know the XD's are popular but I'm gathering they are still a relatively cheaply made wheel.

here is a pic of my set up. I chose to stay with the stock size Nitto teragrapplers on 17s for ride quality, i just wanted a more aggressive tire to be able to maneuver my trailer offroad.

That is true, I've had my XD's for about 3 years now. My center caps are flaking, but I've ordered some already & got 'em. Waiting to get my new tires before I put 'em on there.

I did a couple quick photoshops the last couple days. I did the Black and Chrome XD spy and the EA 079 SuperFinish. The 079 is only available in a 20x9 with a 0mm offset so i have to look into that one a little more. I talked to one guy who said he is running a 0 offset with 305's and it only rubs slightly. So he was assuming a 275 would be fine. The tires aren't an exact match to what I'll be running but the idea is close enough.
