looking for another Chevy or GMC

Hey guys, I'm looking for opinions on 99-01's and what to look out for and what to get. My wife has decided it's time to trade up to a newer truck and I'm trying to stay GM.

Since the majority of this board is newer model, I figured you could help me out. Looking for price info (what I should expect to pay), mileage info (what you guys currently have), what I can skip on for options, and what I should try to get.

I've already driven a 99 with the 4.8 and seems strong, have not driven the 5.3 yet. Also....looking to stay with a 1500 ext. cab.

Let the info fly :D

By the way, if anyone is interested, mine is for sale. Some info is in my sig  :)

The 4.8L or 5.3L would do fine.  I would stick with 3.73 gears (no 3.42's since you tow) or 4.10's.  Also make sure the truck has the towing package and probably the G80 locker for those slippery boat ramps.

The '00 and newer trucks have slightly higher HP ratings than the '99s.

Listen for the driveline "clunk" when you test drive them.  Also check for the slight "clunk" (felt not heard) in the steering wheel when it is turned slightly.

I think all the '99 and up trucks are pretty good, and I don't think there are any specific problems to any model year.

I'd try to find one with a little warranty left on it so you can have the dealer work out any little bugs you might come across.

There should be alot of excab short bed trucks available to chose from...  Happy Hunting!!!

Thanks Shaners

Everything is still up in the air now. I'm not sure I can afford any thing that may still have a warranty, money is tight and I'm still not working  :)

Todays lower interest rates may also be a big help to you especially if you are paying a higher rate on your current truck.

My credit union at work is offering 4.9% up to 60 months on '98 and newer trucks...  Check around and you'll be surprised how much your monthly payments will go down over a few percentage points.

I would try to find a 01. There was a big difference between my 99 and my 01. The 01 was much tighter and better overall fit and finish. The frame crossmember for the transmission was improved on the 01.
