Relocate ABS Controller?

00 Sierra 4x4 extended cab.

 

A few years ago, the ABS module went. Removed it and I managed to solder a bad wire, but it was a ginormous PITA to get the lines off to get it out - access is bounded by the frame, torsion bar, transfer case and cab floor.

 

Couple days ago, the brake line to the rear axle went between the gas tank and the frame rail. I have the tank out, but the entire line is rusted to the point of crumbling away.

 

I can't get the fitting out of the ABS controller to replace it, nor can I get any of the other fittings loose on the ABS controller. If I can get a wrench on them, and I can move the wrench (both big "ifs") the fitting is frozen on there solid. Even tried a torch on the one I really need off. At this point, I'm going to have to cut the lines, put the controller on a bench and get all the fittings free, then run new brake lines, front to rear, ABS to MC, and ABS to front wheels. Have all the supplies.

 

Anyhow, being I'll have had this module out twice, and it's in such a cramped location, I noticed that further back on the frame rail (around the fuel filter), there's gobs of room, and by the looks of the components, less salt spray.

 

I have to run all new lines anyhow - running them an extra foot or two doesn't cost me any more or much time since I already have the coil and it's more than I need.

 

The only other complication is I'd have to cut and lengthen the two harnesses for the ABS controller. A lot of soldering and shrink wrapping, but not particularly complicated.

 

Considering how big this job is already, I think taking a little extra time to put the controller a few feet back in a more accessible spot is worth it. Might even make a little shield for it to protect it from salt spray to keep the corrosion down.

 

Anyone see any reason why this wouldn't work, or are there any problems it would cause that I'm not seeing?

I decided to go ahead and try it.

 

Got some compression fittings and some fuel line pigtails. Relocated the fuel filter a few inches back. Put a slit in the frame rail to let a hose clamp slip through so I could fasten the filter. It now sites inboard of the chassis rail rather than inset within the frame rail. Reran the rest of the fuel line.

 

I cut the top off the plastic clamp that held the filter and removed the upper bolt. Used that for the rear of the three ABS module bracket mounts. Drilled two more holes in the frame rail for the other bolts. Fuel line runs behind the ABS pump inboard of the frame rail. I think I have enough clearance, but just to be sure, I put a few washers behind the ABS pump bracket to space it away from the fuel line. I also covered the fuel line with shrink wrap tubing for any abrasion and to keep it from rusting.

 

I got all the fittings off the ABS pump once I cut the lines. I'm about to run the rear brake line off the ABS pump. I may put the tank back in before running the front lines - haven't decided yet. Also need to extend the ABS module harnesses about a foot.

 

Clearance between the ABS pump and the fuel filter is tight, but not so bad I can't get a wrench on the filter - and I put a new filter in while I was back there.

 

I snapped some before pics. I'll try to get some after pics, but it probably won't be until tomorrow. Don't have much daylight left and the Sierra's too big to fit in my little garage.

Yes, that is a serious pain in the ass. I've been there. Definitely want to see pics when done!

u should get a job at g.m......my old truck and three guys from work with same vintage trucks all had same issue. apparently engineers and designers can't factor in things like road dust and salt and what it might do. i am sure guys would like to see a pic or two of that!!
