Setting up a site for e-commerce

The company I work for is just breaking into the market place and we want to set up some type of shopping cart on a site to take credit card orders from the site.

Does anyone have experience doing this or can point me in the right direction?  I'm doing all of the site work myself and I haven't done any e-commerce type work before so I'm a bit unsure of where to begin.

Thanks

--Edit--

While we're on the subject, anyone looking for an all stainless steel beer faucet :chevy:

I know a few buddies of mine envy my job, we've got three kegs of beer on tap in our office.

I don't have any experience with running an e-commerce site myself, but I have heard the easiest way to do it is through Paypal.

If I were you, I would ask Jason Pendlum about it.

Good Luck

Do you already have a domain name and website?

What will you be selling?

Do you have a merchant account?

How much are you looking at to spend at setting it up?

We already have a domain name and I've got a site set up w/ information on the products.  What we are looking at doing now is just setting up a shopping cart.

We use M&I Bank, but they haven't gotten back to us about how to set it up.

We sell equipment for setting up beer systems from keg to valve.  Within the next few years the goal is to have everything necessary to get from the keg to the valve.  Right now we've got one product which is the beer faucet and pretty soon we'll have a keg valve and a few other items.

By no means is this going to be a huge online store, just something simple and easy to manage.

Well, if you have currently one product, you could setup the site and have payments done via pay-pal.

For site wide shopping carts, check out:

http://www.oscommerce.com

http://www.phpshop.org

http://www.x-cart.com

I've installed and used those for various clients before.

If your bank won't give you a full merchant account right away or too costly, could also look into a 3rd party payment processor like 2checkout or paysystems.

If you need more info, send an email to me: [email protected]
