Tire "Feathering"

Anyone out there experiencing this on their trucks or suv's?

 

I have not rotated my tires in 10k miles, however I believe it to be an alignment issue, relating to the "toe" setting".

 

I am running 285x45xR22 on a high quality 22x9.5 rims (+34mm offset).

 

Any comments would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I had it happen with a set of Bridgestone Dueller's because of not rotating properly, could never get them to ride smooth again.

Feathering on inside or outside? How bad? Pictures are almost a necessity for a topic like this. 10 K with no rotate is definitely a problem. Also did you have alignment done when switching wheels and tires? If not I would check front steering and suspension and start with alignment.

Sorry for the lack of information, the "feathering" was light on the outside part of the tread.

 

I had the vehicles tires rebalanced and "cross rotated" (non directional)@ the place of purchase, and had the vehicle re aligned.

 

The alignment was dead on (I had previously purchased a 2 year alignment plan), with no toe problems. It was a 4 wheel alignment so I know the rear wheels are straight to the front.

 

After total examination of the front end and shocks (all was good) I was told that the rims on the vehicle (I purchased at the same shop as the tires)were a different offset than the stock (+34 vice +31) and in their opinion was enough to change telemetry of the suspension. They suggested I return in 5k miles to have the tires re rotated and rebalanced (a free service).

 

I do not know if their analysis is correct, or they are blowing smoke up my rear end, however I am going to go have the vehicles tires rotated @ 5k.

 

I have my alignment checked and corrected every 4 months (with the package I purchased).

I think they're give you some BS about the wheel offset causing feathering, and I rotate at every oil change just to be safe. I know that may be overkill, however it's an inexpensive way to prolong the life of my tires.

So then you think it is more of a rotational issue?

I know mine got that way from not rotating them properly, but I would guess that worn front end parts and bad alignment could cause it also, I'm definitely no mechanic though man.

Yes I agree, and my vehicle is a 2013 model, so upon inspection all the front end bushings and the shocks are good.

 

I am going to start a rigid tire rotation every 5k miles, and have the vehicle realigned (upon the rotation).

 

I too am by no means an expert on anything mechanical.
