Input appreciated

It is great to have a place to go where there is information, help and feedback on the trucks we love.

Here is what I am dealing with. I have a 96 GMC Sierra, extended cab, 4x4, Vortec V6, manual with 170K. I am not a mechanic and don't know a whole lot about engines, suspensions etc. but I love trucks, always have so that is what I drive.

My ride is a complete dog, no power what so ever. I bought it from a co-worker for $300.00, so I am not complaining. The engine sounds strong, but when I hit the throttle it is unresponsive. So my question is, what would be the first things I should check. The guy I bought it from was old school and thought it beneficial to run 20W-50 in it. This sounds like a case of over kill or trying to hide a knock, but he claims to have always run the heavy grade in his trucks.

What ever input you have would be great, and appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks, yeah a tune up is in the near future. I am not sure when it was last serviced, so it is better to get it done and know for sure.

I did notice the belt tensioner was a little off, so I am going to replace that and the belt too. I am also going to go back to manufacturer recommended grade oil. It has been running synthetic so I will continue with that, but here in PA I think 20w50 is definitely not needed.
