Valve Train Noise

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

My '97 Z71 (5.7 L Vortec) is ticking around the valve train on only the drivers side.  It happens all the time, whether it's cold or warm.  I first thought it was exhast, cuz I could hear whooshing air from inside the cab, but a new manifold and donut gasket fixed that cab noise, but I can still clearly hear ticking when I am outside the truck.  Took it to a mechanic I trust and he said the valve train looks fine and not to worry, but it's driving me crazy.

Come springtime I am thinking about running some 10W-30 through there, maybe the rockers aren't getting enough lubrication???...All the truck has ever had is Mobil-1 5W-30 synthetic.

1) Is it ok to run 10-30 even though it says use 5W-30 on the oil filler cap?

2) Any other ideas on how to make this go away...or if I should just suck it up and forget about it?

Thanks for any advice.

check the simple stuff to start with like around the fan area and drivebelt

If one of those pulleys has something in it or has gone bad it can make the same sound as you are describing
