I've been dedicated to th market for the "long term" so it's definatly a big low in the "highs and lows".

However, since the terrorist attacks I'm suffering a solid 5 figure loss this week alone (not counting the downturn for the last 9 months)...  However, since I'm in the market for the long run, I'm buying stock like crazy!!!

I'm confident in the recovery over the next deacade and I'll continue to support American business to the best of my abillity..

Yes, you are being the true American, doing your part to help stimulate this lagging economy by pumping money into it.  I am confident that you will regain your losses, maybe not this year, but within the next few.  Neither me, nor anyone in our family, has any money in the stock market.  We simply have too much of a gamble year to year in our main occupation to be willing to lay out more money in another risk filled interest, but if I had the money to invest I too would be buying stocks at this time.

I think you have a great plan for what to do in the current situation Shaners.  I've seen many economists say to do exactly what you are doing, to buy stocks now while they are relatively low.  The economy is definetly going to recover, but we don't know when.

I just wish more people were supporting the American economy like you are.....

shaners sorry to hear about that.  I think if your in for the long run you will be fine.  The market goes up and down and if you can handle that you will be fine.

Ok for you financial guys.  Way back when a few yrs ago i put a bunch of money (15-20K) in cds and made about 500-1K.  I would like to invest 500-1K for the long term (5 yrs +).  What route should i go?   I would also like access to this money in case i needed it since my bank account isnt that large (only about 4K at the moment.

Thanks

Ryan,

This may sound stupid, but here is a stock that I wish I had bought for my kids last year.  "Tootsie Roll"!!!   LOL

They are a solid and virtually debt free company and there stock has done remarkably well this year...

They lost about 2-3 dollars per share this week where GE my prime investment lost $10 along with most major companies...

I started looking hard at them (Tootsie Roll or TR on the DOW) about a year ago at $28/share  they closed @ $36.46 today...

They are down too..., but figure your one year investment is still up $8/share and that is great considering everything (up %30 over 52 weeks)

Eveyone loves Tootsie Rolls and they always will...

Solid Company...  weak dividends... great return over the haul...  (at least for the last 5 years)

I'm not a broker and I don't want you to hold me accountable, but check them out...

Right now, I'd buy into Rental Car, Amtrak, or Greyhound stocks if I could.

Not trying to sound like a selfish B*st*rd, but w/ everybody being afraid to fly, how else they gonna get there?

I predict that $$$$ in those 3 industries will rise in the near future.

P.S. How exactly does Stock exchange work?

You buy low and if the stocks get better you sell @ higher price?

:D

Now is a great time to buy stocks.  Not so good a time for gold, silver, etc. (price is high).  For those just getting started and not sure about the whole thing, you can head over to The Motley Fool and get a good, basic education in the basics of investing.  I'm actually kind of excited to see stock prices down so much because my 401(k) can buy more for less :D

In his retirement, my dad has evolved into a day trader.  He's been pulling the last of his hair out this week, but he has it set up where if his stocks reach a certain point, he sells automatically.  Long term is the way to go and penny stocks are a great way to get your feet wet -:D
