96 Blazer sounds like it's ready to explode

My daughter recently bought a 96 Blazer, manual trans, only 80k original miles. She says when driving on freeway, she shifted into 4th and the engine reved real high so she stopped.

Listening to car, it makes a horrible, loud clanging noise. Sounded to me like it was getting ready to throw a rod, or maybe something worse...

On closer listening underneath the car, however, it sounds like the gawdawful noise is coming somewhere from the vicinity of the bell housing or transmission....

It can be put in and out of gear, although clutch is very loose. Letting the clutch out just enough to put a little strain on the engine seems to quiet the ugly noise just a tiny bit, but not by much.

What might be the problem?

Thanks in advance!

Matt

A broken dampener spring in the pressure plate will make a nasty noise. Might be somthing to check.
