ya all also hav ta member that at all temps dem dare West-by-God-Virginans is all keep'in the insides warm wit their own special anti-freeze.

Some of the best 'anti-freeze' I ever had was back in a side holler off of Cabin Creek (down by WV Tech).  It was given to me as a gift by the father of a young man who was interested in joining the Marines (back when I was a recruiter).  He said the Marines were the only recruiters who would even come out to see his son and that I was the first 'city boy' he ever met who could drink shine without it taking the breadth away.

That 1 qt kept me warm ALL winter.

:P

Cabin Creek is right below where Tom and I used to live.  The actual creek runs through right down the hill from where we lived, in Miami, West Virginia.

Thanks Elwood-I was beating my brains out trying to remember Homer Hickam's name!  He's a NASA engineer and the movie is based on his book "Rocket Boys".

Moulder & Scully spent alot of time chasing down creepy paranormal X-Files sh*t in the backwoods of WV...does that count for making us famous too?? :P  ???

Yep, Cabin Creek.

I was pretty sad when we left, losing friends and all, but I'm glad we moved to Summersville.  :thumb:

While I was a young Sergeant on recruiting duty in West-by-God-Virginia during the very early 80's, I had received a request for information and poster from a individual named Dewaye Crawford from Cabin Creek.  Being the good recruiter, I immediately tried to make contact with this individual to see if he was Marine Corps material.

Well, I called and got his mother.  She told me Dewayne was already a Sgt or something the Marines.  (happens a lot, active duty Marines wanting some of the recruiting posters).

We chatted a while and then I filed the card as a 'bad lead, already in' and promptly forgot about.

About a week or two later, on a friday night about 1700, this mountain of a man in a flannel shirt and blue jeans appears in the recruiting office doorway.  I asked if I could help him and he stated that he was looking for the Marine that called his mother down in Cabin Creek.  As that was my area, I said it was me.  He then proceeded to introduce himself as The Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Leyland D. Crawford.

Talk about an eye opener. :hail: :P

There is a lot more to this story (to include more than a few )  but I'll stop here.

bummed.

There was a story going around at time while I was in WV recruiting that Chuck was going to get special permission to fly under the WV Turnpike Bridge over the Kanawha River as part of a celebration of one of his 'anniverseries'.

I don't if it ever did happen or not, but I remember all the hopla surrounding the rumor(?).

bummed
