2014 front shocks and springs

I'm thinking of changing the spring on the front to drop it an inch. Do I understand correctly that the shock and spring come out as one not under any spring tension when unbolting from truck but I will need a auto shop or strut spring compress tool to get the spring off the shock? Is this correct? The rear of the truck will be next to do. Thx

Ideally yes, you can just unbolt the spring/strut assembly and drop it out. In practice, a prybar usually comes in handy, but its wouldn't be anything unmanageable. When it comes to a spring compressor, make sure you have a good strong one.

 

I grenaded the bearings on our shop strut compressor once trying to compress the spring to replace struts on an Excursion. Most strut compressors aren't really made strong enough to work well with the bigger truck springs. For the excursion we ended up using a pair of small screw-type spring compressors, along with the (now slightly screwed up) wall-mounted spring compressor to get the job done. It should be easier to get the new shorter springs in than it is to get the stock springs out.

I haven't found a press yet that'll touch any of the '07 up front strut springs. I bent mine (supposedly good to over 500 lbs. of force ... but made in red china), and it didn't move the spring 1mm! None of the garages I stopped at could touch it either. The wire size of this spring is HUGE by automotive standards. I ended up bringing my struts to a local GM dealer to get swapped out. $90, but was out of options at the time.
