Ok - got it. Set back with your response. Without the mic being in a well, your concept will degrade over time, another reason to press-on. Occasionally repack the cotton to mitigate this. Not a big issue at this point, as my ideas don't involve cotton. Your photo surely looks like the depth is deeper, do this. Take a standard stick pin and place it in the opening. When it stops, provide me with the percentage of the pin left exposed.

The grille you provided in the photo 1 is the one for bluetooth. Pop off the grille again and see if the mic is similar to the others. If so, I will be able to get measurements.

You are 100% right about needing to re-pack the cotton balls! The cotton I originally used a few weeks ago has now been "squished" down to the point to where they won't be as effective.

I'll get you the measurements when I replaced the tape and cotton. Just to be sure, you're needing the depth of just the foam O ring..? Not the whole opening where the mic is exposed?

20sierra - real quick, gotta go out and do some yard work, 75 degrees on the CCC (California Central Coast). I have an idea on an improvement on yours before we get to mine. This improvement is intended to maintain some integrity with your concept to minimize or eliminate the cotton degrade (what I mean by degrade, without a well the cotton will move over time).

Take a paper cup, cut off the small end to where it just look like a small cup. At this point it has to be small enough to fit in the mic space. Slice an end of the cup to fit around the mic, slide into place, repack your cotton. A mic well should minimize the amount of resonance picked-up by the mic outside of the well. Ok, got it, I'm out for a while.

Depth of just the O ring, front to back. Also provide the O ring inner diameter.

What is the GM Underbody Shield? A dealer installed option? What exactly is it.

From the GM website, looks like a shield at the back of the vehicle only.

BTW, Anon, sound like you have your own fleet going there! What's up with that?

The underbody shield is a GM accessory for the Yukon...it is installed under the engine/transmission and transfer case. They are NOT skid plates but do provide some protection against FOD kicked up under the vehicle. Skid plates are not available for the 15 yukon at this time; but, the under body shield will serve as a pattern for steel skid plates. No fleet. Going to build two Kodiaks.

I bring the UBS up here ruminating about the change in air flow below the vehicle, not 'loose' items.

I can appreciate the detail you are going through to alleviate this problem but I just can't get past a customer having to do this to a $70K vehicle. It makes my head spin.

Well - this train was almost at the end of it's journey as far as the buffeting was concerned and what a customer could do to mitigate it, but there has been another thread started on the buffeting and pressure. I am not willing to go back to the station and arrive to where this thread currently is, too much data and continuity. I have respectfully jumped off the train and when the other thread catches up to this point, I'll jump back on.

Yes to cross bars. Kodiak ... think Range Rover but more capability, more thoughtful features (like EPIRB/SatComm, water storage, alternative power source, adjustable ride height, arrival/departure angle improvements, etc).

I am not willing to go back to the station and arrive to where this thread currently is, too much data and continuity. I have respectfully jumped off the train and when the other thread catches up to this point, I'll jump back on.

Huh? This thread and the other are no where near the same.. This one has taken to the point of FIXING the issue, the other is to compile a list of people who have the issue ONLY -- not to simply start over. That would be dumb.

If the other thread would create utter confusion (or you to stop your research), I'll have it deleted.

So I guess I need someone to tell me its all in my head. The reason we pursued the buy back from GM was because of the headaches and pressure we (my wife and 4 kids) were experiencing. I drove my Yukon XL daily, and they were in it on the weekends. I still have daily headaches and pressure. After seeing the doctor several times, 2 hits of different antibiotics, the doctor wants me to have an MRI. Thought it was sinus issues, but they ruled that out. I'm 33 and never have had any issues in the past. I am hoping this is pure coincidence. Has anyone else had the vehicle bought back, and still suffer from these symptoms?

fourknuckles - ironic timing you log on as I am about to post, you started this thread, this post is for you and the family

20sierra14 - I misinterpreted your intent, my bad. A few months ago I purchased packing tape, foam, plastic cap, liquid rubber, plastic, and quality cowhide leather all to explore options, the more time past, the more the options and materials increased. I intended to use all those resources, but not having access to grilles, precise mic data (although what you provided was enough), and 82 degree temps today, allowed me to do some yard work and brainstorm a bit more. After the yardwork, I thought waiting to obtain grilles was not fast enough so I began to fabricate what I now call option 14, with the understanding that if this didn't work there were 13 other options that may also work (we still have the cotton balls and tape to fall back on also)

But, when the fabrication was done, I ended with what I believe to be the "best" 2-piece option for the buffeting. This option does not require any cotton or tape, although if tape is used it won't be visible from the outside of the grille. Answer a question, put an index finger in both ears and tell me what you hear? When you post your answer, I will PM you a picture of what I fabricated and tell you what to do.

Give it a test drive and tell folks what you think. I went for the kill shot (best option), if it doesn't work, we go to the next option.

Again I remind folks, it is not the customer responsibility to fix this issue, only mitigate it until a fix is provided

4knucks - do you still own one of these vehicles? From earlier posts, I believe there were only 5 members on this thread to include you that obtained a buy-back. A few are still on the thread. Send them a PM, I believe your family issue is related to the pressure issue on this thread.

This is extremely concerning -- for you and me both!

Here's my experience -- A couple weeks prior to my "cotton ball" idea, my wife, who is the primary driver of our Yukon, was experiencing extreme dizzy spells at work. She never told me she was getting headaches like our 1st Yukon SLT, but she was getting these random dizzy spells a couple times a week. I didn't think much of it and certainly did not associate it to the Yukon -- but guess what?? Ever since I "silenced" our ANC mics with cotton balls, she hasn't ONCE had a dizzy spell!

I remind you, I never hinted it could be the Yukon causing the symptoms -- As bad as it sounds, I observed her symptoms to test my theory... Guess what -- It worked!

Ever since I've "silenced" the ANC mics, my wife has yet to have another spell! This is why I'm 110% positive the ANC is the root of our ear pressure/headaches!

But FOUR, I really hope this isn't something permanent - and certainly NOT something caused by these trucks! Keep us posted!

All - The next sentence from the Enhanced Sound thread is why have I been pushing to mitigate the pressure. "If you are in a plane and your ears will not pop, this is what I mean by enhanced. This effect does not work well with me, my last episode on a plane resulted in coughing-up blood associated with this “enhanced sound”. This problem may not get to that point but I've always considered it a safety issue, but now folks on the fence may want to finally do something instead of waiting for GM to fix the issue. 4Knucks, hoping the pressure is not the issue but wishing the best outcome for you and the family

What I fabricated was in essence a "Mic Plug" (MP), look at it as an ear plug for the mic. This was logical and made sense, I laughed when I completed it. The MP is in 2 pieces constructed of foam and a plastic cap. Based on dimensions and specifications of the mic provided by 20sierra14, I found a cap then fabricated a plug. The way it should work; take the plug and place it into the center diameter portion of the mic, flush it with the top. Then take the cap and cover both the plug and the outer portion of the mic, flush to the bottom. What you will end up with is a mic which is effectively plugged and capped. My understanding of ANC is it operates under sound and resonance initiated at the mic, none of which should happen if the mic is plugged and capped. The end result will not degrade over time, I considered this the best option but if it doesn't work there are still 13 other options I can try and as a dependable back-up, the cotton ball and tape. Also, these options can work singularly or in combination.

Now I didn't send this to 20sierra14 but advised him how and what to do as an effective option similar to this one (option 15?). As I sit and write now, I have thought about 2 more options. Since none of the options can work for me, hopefully you guys can benefit from my R & D, something GM can take a page from.
