Magnaflow Exhaust

I just had the Magnaflow 12589 installed on my 2014 Sierra All Terrain 5.3 and it sounds NOTHING like the videos I watched before ordering. I also had the resinator removed. Just curious if anyone else has this muffler with the resinator removed and is experiencing the same problem. At start up, it has more of a sputtering sound rather a deep tone and it also makes the same sound after idling down and shutting off. None of the vidoes I watched on youtube did this.

You have a resonator not a resistor. Did you make sure they removed the valve after the muffler. If not, you should clamp it open.

Correction resonator. I did not make sure they removed the valve after the muffler but i'll check in to it tomorrow. Is this something I can do myself? All I know is my exhaust sounds nothing like those that were on YouTube and we're supposedly running the same setup.

Yes you can. If the valve is still there, they'll be a square spring loaded lever on the other side of the pipe facing the driveshaft.

Go to a hardware store and pick up a 3/8-1.5" bolt, nut, lock washer, and a (2) 1" flat washers. With the the washers and nut on the bolt open the valve and install the bolt/nut assembly into the lever and tighten. This will hold the clamp open.

The valve is there to reduce drone when it switches to V4 mode. They're have actually been instances of the valve freezing shut in colder areas. I opened mine a couple months ago on my stock exhaust and I think it sounds a lot better. Really no difference in drone or fuel economy.

I installed the same muffler just a week after I bought my '14 Silverado. Honestly, I drove home and turned around and drove back to the muffler shop! It sounded EXACTLY LIKE STOCK. :nonod: I had him remove the flapper and resonator and it wasn't much better.

I had to get under the truck and check to see if the Magnaflow was actually on there!

After 6 months I couldn't take the "quiet" anymore and I went back and had him install the 14" Magnaflow.

That's more like it!!! Should have done that from day one.

(I say again. I like drone).

Well I was trying to steer clear of having to scream at whoever is in my passenger seat to have a decent conversation...with that said, it would be nice for my truck to sound like a truck. I may end up having to swap the 22" Magnaflow for the 18" if opening the flapper doesn't help any. Hopefully it doesn't come down to that.

Truthfully with the 14", I don't find it annoying at all. Neither does my wife or passengers. No raising voices, never have to say, "Huh?" or "I didn't hear you".

Perhaps a little louder than you would like, but the 18" would probably suit you better.

Just from my experience, when I took mine back after 6 months and told my guy I wasn't happy, he replaced it with the 14" for free.

(I don't tell anyone that story locally because he would be flooded with hundreds of people saying, "Hey, where's MY free muffler?!!!!!" You know how people are.)

Funny thing is, I had the 22" on my '13 Silverado. That thing was LOUD! The geometry of the '14+ exhaust system is a complete new design. Sound is not similar at all.

Did you do away with the flapper and resonator even after swapping to the 14"?

Tanner... here's the problem with the videos. You won't really know how it's going to sound until you have the work done and you drive it.

I just don't want you to change to the 14" on my advice and then come back and say... "OMG... I HATE THIS THING... TOO DANG LOUD!"...

I'll just meet you in the middle and go with the 18" if it's still too quiet after opening the flapper. I made a mistake by playing it safe with the 22!!!!
