Exterior Mirror Inserts

My truck came without the chrome inserts on the exterior side mirrors. I keep seeing trucks with these inserts and I really like them, they would really set-off my new bedrails. Can the black inserts (like I have) be removed and replaced with chrome inserts or does the entire assembly have to be replaced? I know someone who is trading in a 2001 Tahoe and I may "swap" these and a few other things . I think the mirrors I may "swap" have the defrost feature... do all vehicles come wired for this by any chance?

my buddy just bought a 2003 avelanche and had the same question.  The dealer told him it would be 250 a side.  he would have to buy the whole mirror assembly.  i believe the mirror from 1999 1/2 thru 2003 on all silverados tahoes and suburbans are the same.  Just try to find a set at a junk yard or something and swap.  I would assume the wiring is there for all the options availible for the year, so the defraust should not be a problem.

I think the inserts can be removed.  Ryanbabz71 took his out and painted them to match his truck.  So you should be able to swap with your buddy.

From what I was told by a body shop and the parts department at the dealer they can be swapped out. The bad thing is you can't by them seperate like stated before in this thread. You have to buy the whole mirror. All you have to do is move the mirror as far to one side or the other and you can reach in and release the clips that hold the mirror on. Then you can access the piece you want to remove. The parts guy at the dealer showed me with a mirror he pulled off the shelf. If you have the heated mirror just be carefull when you take the glass out to watch the wire that connects to it.

Sounds good.... I'll have to do some "swapping" if the trade goes through. Anything else I should look for that I can trade out between the two vehicles?

does that black piece even come out on the 03s?  I havent taken a closer look but i thought its part of the mirror and cant be removed.

 

I know mine came off because i paitned them blue.  I did just buy a pass side mirror (broke mine

) and I doubt i will be using the chrome insert on that one let me know if you could use it

I'll check tonight to make sure they come off. They look like they will but now you have got me wanting to double-check to make sure. If they will not come out, I may just have to change out the whole mirror.

I just did a tahoe mirror swap on my 01 sierra. I swapped the stock power mirrors for the ones that had the defrost and puddle light.  On my truck all I had to do to get the defrost to work is swap out the ac control for one that has the defrost button on it and put a relay in fuse box under the hood. The puddle lights were a little more tricky. I had the pull the door panel off. I have instructions for both doors. Shoot me a email if you want them. They are in word format and are about 800k a piece in size.

I have a 2000 1500 silverado. Bought it in Oct 2002 with chrome insert on drivers side damaged. The insert is not available and yes, dealers want 250-300 to do replacement. Ran across website "AllGM parts" and with shipping got mirror for 134 and it took 15 min to replace. Interior cover snaps off, pull connector apart , take off bolts and replace. It is heated and remote. Mitch PS- unit was shipped from a dealer in martinsberg, Va/genuine GM part.

I would check the wiring on the mirrors if you are considering swapping an 03 with any previous years, as most of the 03 mirrors have integrated turn signals.  These were not available on any 99-02 mirrors.

The tahoe mirror replacement , if I remember right, requires a lot of work. For my 2000 pickup, silverado, there was a small triangular  piece on the door interior opposite of mirror mounting that snaps off easily. This exposes mounting lugs and the wired connector. 15-20 minutes. mitch
